I waited till I was 37 to get married as I only wanted to do this once, her kids are gone, I do have nads, shes kind of prepped on it anyhow. It will probably just follow me home someday. Don't tell her before I buy most things although.... She still don't know about the guitar and amp I bought that stays at the office from earlier this year. Lots of good ideas so far, keep em coming. She's got all the latest gizmos for scrap-booking and a dedicated area to use them. Any discussion that might sound like asking for permission is really just a check & balance, how's the household budget doing, opinion sharing thing. When I bought the KoaT her only question was, "Are you going to play it?". That was not meant to veto the deal, just meant to make me stop & think. Which I did. Then I bought the guitar. End of story.

Of course this only works if you have guns, and a Wife that is not into shooting. In my case I have used this story in the past but recently I did narrow down my hobbies and sold all but the best Over-Under, best Trap, best rifle, and two of my smallest handguns for hiking in the woods. Rest went to the Guns for Guitars program. Well some of it did, the rest went into home improvements. Hey I see I broke 2000, I really have to get a life.

Do you have any female friends that are obsessed about collecting guitars? When it comes right down to it, there is no reason to have as many guitars as many of us do. My wife thought I didn't need more than one or two guitars. She was probably right. Need has nothing to do with it. Logic has nothing to do with it. Having what I think I want has everything to do with it. Although Brad's situation is much more reasonable (he doesn't have as many guitars and actually uses them to perform) ours is also a check and balance system. She still asks my opinion on most major purchases and then buys what she wants anyway. We are in the fortunate situation of not having to do without much of anything. I have also dramatically increased the amount of time that I spend playing since I became obsessed. She appreciates that about as much as I appreciate the time she spends scrapbooking. It's not so much a matter of agreeing with the spouse, it's more a matter of putting up with it. We've been doing that pretty well for 31 years and, like Brad, I like the situation I'm in. We don't hide anything or have to lie, although sometimes we just forget to bring something up. My complaints here are mostly sarcastic. The honest ones are over on the "Spouses Who Snore" forum.

(A baby Taylor that someone gave her.) Then she asked for an electric for Christmas, and her folks bought her a Peavey. Then she fell in love with a Cort Les Paul copy I had on the wall, and bought it with babysitting money. The next "had to have" was a really nice Yamaha classical. More babysitting. Now that those (and two amps) are paid off, she has a Celebrity on layaway. Her parents are kind of like a lot of wives I guess. They got her the first two, after that, she has to pay for her own. I'm so proud of her for working so hard to advance her GAS.

Perhaps unconsciously, one of the accent colors is Lusty Red, and the walls match the green on my resonator. Now she's not as resistant to hanging guitars in the bedroom as she was before.

Joined: August 2008 Posts: 32 Location: Glendale, AZ | I’m in a good situation as far as the wife and money to buy guitars goes. My wife just started guitar lessons and so she is using my old Arbor Sound Port guitar that I have had for about 20 years. Arbor seems to make mostly low end stuff these days. But when I bought this one, I think they were experimenting with higher end guitars. I got it on close out when the experiment failed. Its really a great guitar. Listening to her practice inspired me to play again and I went out and bought a GC178LX. Good price and I’m very happy with it. My 12 year old daughter has been playing an old electric no name guitar that I got when I was 12, about 40 years ago. I let her strip off the old finish and do what ever she wanted with it. So now it’s black with red trim. It didn’t come out too bad and it’s good enough for her for now. So it’s been fun to have a few family jam sessions and practice some songs and rifts. Money wise, I’m not going to be buying an Adamas anytime soon. But there wouldn’t be anything said if I got another guitar, like maybe one of the Ovation electrics. I’m a retired cop and I have my pension money that is mine to do with as I wish. I work full time for the local public defender office as an investigator, and that money goes into the family account which my wife spends. So the house payment gets made, the food gets bought, and the pension funds nights out, vacations, and a toy now and then. Life is good.

Not only are you and your wife having fun, but what you are doing for your daughter will last forever. Even if she gives up playing at some time in the future, you are making memories that she will prize into her old age. Keep up the good work!

I just finally gave the 83 Collector to my 25 year old daughter. I've had the 87 Collector longer. My 21 year old daughter willingly collaborated on the story that I was buying it for her. She will get it when she turns 25 in a few years. I also bought an Applause travel guitar for our oldest, a Celebrity Deluxe for our youngest and a Monterrey (Kaman product) for her boyfriend. GAS attacks work for gifts, too. I've enjoyed the searches, negotiations, trial periods, polishing, minor repairing and restringing of all those gifts.

Now with my current wife I just stick to the truth. I have less guitars but I don't have to worry about remembering my little plots.

I say it's to replace the one that Davis is borrowing because he'll never give it back, She gives that "you gave him another guitar?" look. You can't win. Why try? Just go the Bobbo route.
