Greg, get a cheap flight here and I'll take you the rest of the way. SWMBO wasn't as interested as I thought she'd be (I think she has this fairly reasonable fear that meetings with this group always cause additional guitar purchases), so I might be batching it. Depending on the date, I could make it a 2 day scenic drive each way or a one day balls out drive. Probably go fast one way and slow the other. There's great country between here and there through Eastern Idaho, Tetons, Yellowstone, Northern Wyoming and into the Black Hills.

Hmmmm, something to consider for sure.

Might be a hard sell with Sheri though. I'm already taking a solo guitar vacation this year. Headed to the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop for a week in August.

Two years in a row may be pushing it a bit. But i have a year to "buy" some points and cook up a plan. I'll keep it in mind! Can we take the Porsche :)

Which one? If wives go, we could take both. No room for guitars, though.
Google has it as 835 miles, all on mountain roads at about 18 hours. I haven't spent that much time driving across Idaho and Wyoming since we did it in our 71 VW Bus.

SWMBO: Got any plans for vacation this summer?

Prof: Nope.

SWMBO: I'm thinking about visiting my sister again. Want to come?

Prof: (Contemplative silence.)

SWMBO: Maybe you'd rather take a motorcycle ride someplace?

Prof: (More contemplative silence.)

SWMBO: Why don't I go visit my sister and you go off on your motorcycle?

Prof: O.k.

Maybe I should try that "contemplative silence" sometime. My failures to object are always treated as agreements.

OK, how does this sound? The last week-end of June, 2010. I am going to try to get Craig Caruthers here to put on a songwriting workshop. He has written several hit songs for Nashville stars. He is also one heck of a fine guitarist and a nice guy. The sooner I know how many might attend, the sooner I can get in touch with Craig to get this set up. Let me know.

The weekend after that I may be driving to Illinois and could stop on the way, or I could stop on the way back the next week. I don't think I'll want to do it 3 weekends in a row, though. Is the weekend of July 4 a problem because of the tourist stuff?

Ooh, that sounds like a real winner. Sort of a Western AI, and would give more folks in that part of the country who can't make it to Flah-la-land a chance at a workshop. Great idea.

I'll have to run it by SWMBO, but for now put me down as "likely." Thanks, Ali!

Yeah, Fourth of July can be a little crazy around here. Besides that, I don't know if we could get Craig for that week-end. But even if you come a week early or a week late, it'll still be an OFC gathering! One of my former co-workers at the Moosup factory will likely be here then and you will enjoy my friends who live here too. And you can enjoy all the corny but really neat Fourth activities we have in Hot Springs, like the rubber duck race, the community picnic, the demolition derby, and a REALLY great fireworks show.

I would love to go! The only thing that might get in the way is that my daughter is graduating from high school next year.

I'm a "likely" as well. I wouldn't exactly call South Dakota the west, despite initial reports from Lewis and Clark back to Jefferson. More like a Badlands Bachanal Band OFC get-together.

Put me down as a definite wannabethere. The songwriting seminar would be a great idea!

You probably swear at me frequently as we fly in from Salt Lake. When the weather permits, as we descend over the Black Hills on our way into Rapid City, I like to make a right turn over Crazy Horse and then aim for Rushmore and turn left. That way the passengers on both sides of the aircraft get a view of one or the other attraction. I must say that as I start to think about retirement locations, the Black Hills are on the list just due to how pretty they are from the air. Your get together would be a good excuse to check out the area from ground level.

Keep me in the loop!

OK gang, I just talked to Craig. He's coming. We will be doing the songwriting workshop, probably on Friday the 27th of June, here at the shop. Then we will go down and take over the open mic at the Flatiron. On Saturday evening, Craig will be doing a concert at the Wild Burro bookstore. The workshop fee will be $150. I will need to know how many of you are planning to attend the workshop, and even if you don't want to do the workshop, if you let me know for sure if you're coming, I will be able to get group rates at one of the local motels. I know it's early, but because this is a tourist area, some of these motels are booked a year in advance. So let me know. Thanks.

We can't just sleep in your store?

...just so I've got this straight... we're talking about a year and three months from now, right?

Put us down as for sure. My daughter Sara and I will do the workshop. There will be the rest of the family, too, so we'll want a couple of motel rooms.

Yes, this is a year and three months from now. I wanted to start early so I could book Craig and motel rooms. You have to understand, I am the world's most disorganised person. If I don't start now, It'll be July 2012 before I'm ready!

I would say to put myself and bride of 33 years down for the ride and the workshop.

This should be fun (and drivable for a change!)

I have a place to stay in Hill City. Looks like it might be a pretty easy drive to Hot Springs.

Alison, I wish I could give a COMMIT at this point but, being self employed, it's hard to plan that far in advance. This would be a great trip for SWMBO and I and will definitely go on the schedule. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until this time next year to finalize.

Come on Beggin.....I'm self employed.

Isn't that what gives us the freedom to commit to things like this?

This could be THE event for 2010. Should be a great time. If the schedule works I'll be there, but being self-unemployed I never know what I'm doing till it gets really close so we'll see.

I was just thinking how nice it would be to be "self-unemployed" (meaning retired), when I saw that Beal used the same words that had been thinking. Actually, I was feeling guilty that after 31 years at the same place, I don't feel I can take 2 weeks vacation at one time. That means it's past time to be "self-unemployed".

It's pretty bad when I forget to put "I" in front of "had been thinking". That was before my first cup of coffee, so I guess wasn't thinking yet.
