I just purchased my first guitar, a pinnalce 386 t, made in japan, 1992 or so, torch top, shallow, cut away, electronics have three tone controles and volume.

I found the original list price at a little over a thousand dollers over 12 years ago.

Are all the fancy flame type tops laminate? If so, how bad is the sound compared to the solid tops?

Also, how good are the electrons on these units?

I am new to guitars, and was drawn to the ovation. Is this a keeper, or a first guitar to move up from.

It is very nice looking with no cracks and I think I got a good deal on it at $225 with hard case on E bay. Either that or no one likes this old model.

All comments welcome.

Welcome Russ. I think you've got a keeper. You certainly got a lot of guitar for the money. As you said, these listed for over $1000 back in 1992, which is more than some of the US made models. Someone else will need to answer whether the torch top is solid or laminate, but Ovation has made some laminates that sound outstanding. I have one that I think sounds as good as any solid top Ovation I've played ... different for sure, but very good nonetheless.

The problem you're going to have is keeping enough money around to satisfy the GAS you'll get by hanging around here.

Post some pics when you get the chance.

The top is a laminate. But the original Pinnacles are, in my opinion, excellent guitars for the money and especially at that price. You got a much better guitar than a Celebrity at a Celeb price.

The electronics are good, but they are dated. One can say the same thing about USA Ovations from the same era, however. I never really noticed much difference, if any, in the sound of the FET3 vs. the OP24.
