Location: NJ | A lot of times at gigs, I like to "switch things around" a bit so that my partner and I aren't playing the same "strummy" guitar sound . . .
I'll play my 12-string to counter his 6, or I'll capo-up my guitar and play different chord shapes.
Sometimes I'll do BOTH and get a "PseudoMando" sound by capoing my 12-string (usually at the 5th - sometimes 7th fret). The only problem is that oftimes a 12-string capo'ed that high doesn't always sound "quite right" . . something's always just a LITTLE "out".
A 12-string with an open scale length (and sound) of a capoed 12'd really sweet:
I know! I know! . . . . just LEARN to play a proper mando!!! . . . . blah, blah, blah, blah blah!!!!

Location: Upper Left USA | Make the neck on top a Baritone and then put it below the "Papoose" neck.
Tune them an octave apart (Mando and Mandolynn).
Loose the red, tint it blue and surround it with abalone!
Then you're talking! :cool:

Location: south east Michigan | BrianT and I try to do the same thing. One of us will capo up and the other play open chords just to sound a little different. One problem is that if I get foggy on a chord I can't just glance over and pinch it from him!
We are working on "She Loves You..
Yeah Yeah Yeah". To save the little lead riff I like and also get a key I can sing in, I have to capo up about seven while Brian plays open. I didn't think we could get away with that kind of thing. But if Cliff can do it...so can we. |

Location: Miami, FL | I know I've seena 3 neck version that Sambora played with 6, 12, and a Mando. The Elite version model he used to play. He had a few doubleneck and I know I've seen him with the triple neck. Come to think about it, I think John Paul Jones had a triple neck in The Song Remains the Same.
Way out of my league, price and playability.

Yeah Bill, . . you can DEFINITELY (and "painfully") tell whe mine is "out" . . .
I gotta tell ya, I'm MORE than happy with my Legend-12 on gigs (thanks again, Al!). With all the abuse I give it, it stays in tune. The only time I ever really have a problem is when I capo it up high. It doesn't help when I'm installing the capo in a hurry and that I use really light strings.
I'll have to try that G7 capo when they come out with a 12-string model. . . .

I'd imagine what you're saying is true, but I think my biggest problem is quick/sloppy capo-ing.
That and capoing that high does seem to have a bit of a "damping" effect on the sound. I was thinking that something having an open nut at the 5th fret position'd have a bit more "testicular fortitude" ;-) |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Higher up the neck always brings in intonation problems unless you use individual saddles. I did this once, 12 saddles and 12 chrystals wired for sterio, 6 string one side and the octaves the other. Nice effect but gets old quick. Don't remember how good the intonation was, then again my ear for that is as good as my spelling. |

Location: Navsari, India | a capo will usually pose intonation problems, esp. on a 12 string. Ideally, you'll have to retune a little to compensate for the capo. But it can be a lengthy hit and miss affair. You can also try moving around the capo bet. the frets a little. with a slight angle so that the capo is a little high at the end of the thinner strings. |
