Hello all!

I bought this bass about a year ago. I provided the s/n to the folks @ Kaman twice, and received two different estimates on the # of these that were made and when they were made:

The first guy said "around 3 dozen" fretless versions were made in the mid 1990s

The second guy said "less than a dozen" fretless versions were made in the late 1990s

Anyone here have any insight re: which (if either) is correct?

Also - I knew the factory-installed preamp was bad when I bought it. Hard to find a replacement, for sure ... so, I'm considering 'upgrading' to an active Washburn Equis preamp - which would, of course, require either 1) expanding the original hole that holds the existing preamp, or 2) patching the existing hole, and cutting another (larger) hole further back to accommodate the larger Washburn preamp. Any thoughts re: am I insane , or perhaps some guidance on how to cut the hole in the bass?

Thanks to all -

Welcome MIke!
I bet someone here on the board has the answer to your pre-amp problem sitting in a drawer.
Meeeechigan, eh?
A couple of us get together on the first Tuesday of the month at a cafe in Sterling Heights. Is that within striking distance for you?
We need a bass player for a song we are working on.
Do you play 6-string too?

Hey Brad! Thanks for your reply.

That would be very cool if someone has a spare preamp!

I'm in the NW 'burbs of Motown ... Sterling Heights would be a bit of a jaunt after work since I work downtown (that northbound I-75 PM commute can be a bear, even in good weather), but I'd be open to coming out and jamming sometime ... only issue would be if the venue allows smoking (sorry, but my sinuses don't forgive me for days if I hang out smoke-filled rooms anymore).

Bass is my primary instrument; I hack away on 6-string on occasion, but have been having a blast learning Celtic tunes on mandolin for the past nearly 2 years.

Thanks for your speedy reply -

The "Now & Zen Cafe" is non-smoking. They have a nice living room type set-up. No pressure to perform, very relaxed. It's near Lakeside Mall.
We have played mostly late sixties and seventies pop/rock type songs.
We also have a nice acoustic open mic night on this side of town. A music store has one on the first Friday of the month. No smoke, and there is even a guy who comes in and plays a crosscut saw with a bow.
