Sighting at a Walmart in Columbus, OH...

An Ovation display with several guitars - appeared to be full size guitars (in the toy section) - most likely Celebs but the display was Ovation. This info is from one of my staff so can't tell you much more...

I don't know about Walmart but the Costco (big box membership type store in California) has an 'Ovation' - its an Applause AE227-PK5. Its a cutaway with central sound hole, mid-bowl depth and OP-10 electronics. It comes with gig bag, cheapo electronic tuner, leather strap, strings (didn't check the make) and some Ovation picks all for $289. I have checked absolutely everywhere and I can't find diddly about this model. Kaman music doesn't list it, a Google doesn't find it (in Europe there are AE227s, but not the PK species.) The box says mahogany neck but it looks plastic to me. I've never seen a finish on wood that looks SO plastic. I emailed Kaman (out of curiosity) but never got a reply. It sounds mediocre. The 'G' and 'B' strings sound pretty dead.

Then, a few weeks ago, they, Costco, has a little 'Guitar Fair' thing. I guy with a couple of acoustics, electrics, a uke and a kid's guitar, and AN OVATION. This was an Applause AE-48, either natural or black, for about $265, no extras. He liked having someone playing the guitars to attract customers so I played it (in the truest sense of the word f*$%ing around) for about an hour. He plugged it in and it was OK. Shallow bowl and passive electronics. Acoustic it was pretty balanced across the strings, though not much 'depth', plugged in it was very high pitched. Had to turn the tone way down.
