I have noticed this on a couple of the Adamas I and II guitars...always with a blue top. Is this normal? What is the cause?

If you look at the close up of the body you can see an off colored section surrounding the right side leaf pattern.

It's a "pickguard" (of sorts).

It's a masked-off area that's been clear-coated to offer the textured top some protection from errant strumming.

I guess they tend to "yellow" over time. . . .

I've been lucky with mine thusfar, I guess.

This sure looks like the same guitar that closed last week where the seller clearly said no international bidders, even wrote me to verify where I lived. Appeared that a serious bidder from Belgium backed out. Then, spider comes in at end and is high bidder.

Strange that seller wouldn't have offered the next two highest bidders a "2nd offer." I had been outbid by a US bidder so obviously he/she should have been given 1st option.

I noticed that too, Tony. Maybe with the recent surge in prices, the seller is taking a situation of a buyer not coming through and trying to work it to his/her advantage. Maybe they hope this one will fetch $2500+ this time?

So is the "yellowing" of the pickguard just a phenom of the blue tops or is it just more visible than on the other colors?

Does this also happen with the 597's?

of the few that I have seen, it may be more a function of the camera/picture.

597 is a CVT?/SMT? (forgive my model# ignorance).

I think this was only done on the "older" Adamases. Someone else'd probably be more well-versed than I. It could be that it's just more noticeable on the blue. . .
I just just checked the gallery pic of mine and it IS definitely noticeable. Doesn't seem that prevalant "in person". Could be that the flash accentuates it . .

The pickguard on these older ones was just basically a puddle of polyester which is more prone to yellowing. I think also that cameras see it differently than we do. Not really a big deal.

Yeah I have an older Adamas as well as a slightly newer model. They both have this pick guard material and neither of mine have yellowed? So I would say it is a trick of the camera. Nice guitars, I gotta say, I always, always! get comments about them when I am out.

The colour on this one is a little wierd...like it's bleached or something.

Oh, I see...this is one I'm bidding on. It really is horrible, ugly, ugly, ugly.

And, can't be repaired. Nope, really makes this a guitar to stay away from...

:p ;) :p :p ;) :p ;) :p

Unless it is the photography or my monitor, it lookes much ligher in the center than most -7's I've seen which are more like this one.

Tony I emailed the guy selling that Adamas told him I'd give him $3,000 if he would end the auction!

Actually I was interested in another photo? He said this is real close to the color it is? If that's a #7 which was called Beige, and it did come with a nice blue center color this one is big time faded. I find this strange? Do these fade? I have not seen this in other Ovations or finishes? At least nothing quite this drastic! These Adamas's are strange! It seems Ebay does not have any for many months then foolishly they seem to run two or three at a time? I would think this would make for lower prices.

As a point of interest. My 1687 special ordered in 2002 doesn't have the puddle of poly pickguard at all. In fact the top has a very flat finish where as my 1996 models top had a "pickguard" and more of a sheen to the top.

I prefer my 2002 top( and the ebony fretboard).

Randy,

Side by side, the 1987 #1687, the 2003 custom #1688, and the Adamas II - all are 7's...the 1687 is definately less defined in the center.

However, if fading I would think that it wouldn't be as even around the bridge or epaulets.
