I think I'd like to start messing around with some slide and blues stuff. What's a good inexpensive dobro or resonator? I'd like to keep it say between $300-600. I play mostly unamplified but I do plug in sometimes. I am not familure with the brands and models for this type of guitar.

Also, would I be better off with a square neck or round neck? You can only play slide on a square neck right? Is the square neck superior for slide? Or is it better to be able to do conventional fretting on a round neck?

Thanks

I'd gotten a fairly good inexpensive Chinese "Dobro" from Al at a really good price . . .
. . . don't know if he has any left.

(This one was strictly acoustic, though.)

I just ordered a resonator ukulele. I figured two wrongs might make a right. Dave

You want a round neck, the square neck sits in your lap and you play it like a steel, BIG difference between that and a slide.
You can get a National for 1200-1500 a style O or a Delphi. There are a bunch of others. The best for playing slide will have a flat fretboard.

That should be cool!!
cwk2's National Uke seems to work QUITE nicely,
so I'd suspect you'll be pretty pleased with the outcome.

Who's building it??

A recent Guitar Player reviewed two models of a new Korean resonator guitar and gave it high marks as it had a resonator assembly similar to some of the best. I think it was a Regal, they sell for around $300, Check out some of the recent mags, I gave my copy to my grandson or I would look it up.

At the National guitar workshop classes this summer there was this little kid with a Regel style O. It seemed just fine, quite loud and the right tone. Of course this kid kept playing the same Son House lick overandoverandover......

Of the cheaper Resos Johnson sound about the best to me. As 85%+ of a resonator guitars sound is the cone, you can pretty much buy any cheap imported guitar and significantly improve it by spending $60 on a Quarterman or National cone.

I would agree, that and a good set up job. Elixers work well too because of less finger squeek and less slide noise.
