Well, I've been lurking for some time and thought it was time to jump in. I was reading a post from Paulcc1 - checked out his Elite and Fender Accoustic Jr (nice rig btw Paul!), and was curious.

I too had the accoustic Jr and loved it - but I swapped everything out and replaced it with a PA system. I found that all my Ovations sounded - hmmm - somewhat cleaner and fuller through the PA. Curiously this wasn't true of some of my other accoustics.

I know sound is a personal thing - but I'm curious to know what gives people the most flexibility with tone? Personally I have more flexibility via the PA - and like the overall color and tone I can get...

I beleive a PA system would be nicer. It was ssuggested when I was asking for advise on an amp. However, I already have 3 guitars kept out in the living room. A PA system would have been pushing it.

Welcome to the group Dano...

I can't say too much on amping, as I play mostly acoustic... Just wanted to say HI and welcome!

Thanks for the welcome!

I mostly play accoustic as well - but for some reason I prefer the amped sound of the Ovations. Go figure!

Oh, and does anyone know - are all Ovations being loaded with D'addario strings? When I got my first Ovation (Elite) several years ago - they came loaded with Adamas strings (1818's I believe). Now they seem to be loaded with D'Addarios. I still like the sound of the Adamas strings and they are half the price!!!

Dano,

Welcome to the board.

USA Ovations used to come from the factory with Adamas strings, but now come with D'Addario EXP coated strings. They last a lot longer without going dead, which is a smart move for guitars that may be sitting for a while without a string change.

I like the sound of my guitars through certain amps, but 95% of my playing is through a sound system with EV mains and subs and JBL monitors. I have grown accustomed to the fuller sound of my guitar in the mix and I live with a regular monitor wedge rather than using an amp for a stage monitor and D.I.

But it really is a matter of application and choice, isn't it? My band doesn't change much and my venue is constant, so I am not really served by an amp which may raise the stage volume more than necessary or appropriate in the room in which we play.

What I find I have to do to get my tone and effects right is to practice without the band and get where I can hear the house sound, then tweaking to my taste. When we are live, it is up to the sound man because I can't hear what the house is hearing, and the monitors are dry, effectswise.

Well, as per the norm for many of my posts, y'all have probably read more than you wanted to know....

Welcome!

Glad to hear from Slipkid and any of the Pauls - Never too boring ;)

Love those D'Addarios with the little colored ball ends - makes everyday like Christmas.

I think acoustics always sound better through a PA system whether it is miked or direct, a PA system is usually designed for vocals, which is certainly acoustic. Basses, electric guitars, etc. are dependent on amps to produce their sound more than the instruments themselves or, at least, in conjunction with the instrument. he only way an electric can go directly to a PA is through one of the modern POD's etc if they want any kind of control.

I've has several acoustic amps and found them to be fairly decent, but I prefer the sound of a P.A. system. For the price of a good quality amp, you can almost but a small P.A. set up. I have also found the amps to be very heavy and difficult to lug around. A P.A. is also heavy, but at least you can move in pieces. I also use JBL speakers which employ composite enclosures which makes them much lighter than similar wooden enclosures.

Welcome MrDano,
I am very new to the Ovation guitar but I can say this I can get an easy and better balance of tone with my Ovation than with my Fender and Washburn I had. As far as going through a PA I cant help ya sorry.

Ah - feed back is great on the board - not so much on the mic! I'm fairly isolated in my playing and tweaking - it's nice to hear other's opinions!

I have a Pod XTPro and a Line6 Variax - gives me all the electric joy I can handle - but I stopped playing the Ovations through the POD - even tho I think their accoustic amp models are pretty good. My fender 12 string sounds good through the POD - but I chaulk that up to poor pickups.

I'm going to experiment somewhat with the Adamas strings on the Ovation - mostly cause I order in bulk because none of the stores around here stock em - BUT I do like the Addario's - even if I'm color blind!!!

Hey Dano, sounds like you are a ways from civilation. I also live out in the country and I love it. It does mean that I have to order most every thing I need. Thank God for mail order and the internet.
Living in the country offers some advantages and disadvantages... I can blast as loud as I want, with no one to complain... Well, except for the animals... I had a cow come up to my front door to listen. I thought, atleast some one likes my playing, then she promply turned her back and pissed on my front porch... I make sure the front gate is shut when I play now.
PHEW!

What kind of cow was it Dale? Some of 'em don't have very good taste. Or is it that some of 'em don't taste very good?

Dale, although some people may indeed consider that living in Toronto is living far away from civilization, it is one of Canada's largest cities.

Ahh yes, I see... I miss understood the "buying in bulk" thing to mean country living... That's what I get for trying to read, eat lunch and post at the same time... sorry

I got Toronto on the post - but it's actually a couple of hours out of the city - so you did read right - mail order and who'd of figured that this internet thing would ever catch on eh! Love that Musicians Friend!!!

Welcome

I hate to say this, but I learned to play mostly in a barn full of dairy cows. My mother, and dad, were big band fans and very critical of the nasal sound of country, so my brother and I and our friends who played were relegated to the barn. I also had to milk those cows, and I swear they gave more milk after a good country session by Johnny, Bill, and I. I never checked it, but their production of shoveled goods might have increased also, cows have a habit of pissing on everything with Niagra like force, whether it is a criticism or a form of applause is not certain even by experts like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.

Bailey

PS Nobody please say the obvious
"NO S--T", no they did a lot of that too but with no sign of critical thought.

Hi Dano,

I have a Peavey Ecoustic 112, but I usually play through our bass player's PA System when we are not in church. In church I have had the opportunity to play through a pair of JBL Eon15s, as well as, the church house PA system. (Huge system, church seats 1300 People)

I believe an acoustic guitar amp is basically a small PA system. Like most amplification, having sufficient headroom is key to good sound.
My acoustic amp is supposed to be 100 watts (50 watts for guitar channel and 50 watts for mic?)

I use my acoustic amp when I lead P&W solo since I get drowned out by more that 6 or 8 people singing along without amplification. It works well in a smaller room of 25 - 30 people.

Bottom line, when a PA is available, forget the acoustic amp.

I sure wished I'd of played a guitar as a kid. I didn't know any one that did to give me any inspiration. I didn't even start till I was 25, and then played off and on. Only the last couple of years have I played on a regular basis...

I'd sure like to think that old cow gave me a sign of approval, but some how I don't think so...

My family can have the TV up so loud that you can't hear the dogs bark, then ask me, when I'm in the other romm, if I can play softer!!!
I get no respect!

Hi, Mr. Dano:

Hello and welcome!

I go straight to the board as I don't have an acoustic amp. I believe that through a PA there is less coloration of your sound.
