Location: Midland, MI | Gmail is Google's new web-based free email thingy. The deal is you get 1GB of space, all of your email is searchable (using the Google engine, of course), blah blah blah. Kind of a supercharged Yahoo! or Hotmail account. Of course, they put some unobtrusive ads up on the right hand side of the page (seriously, I know they're there, but I don't even notice them most of the time...although it is amusing to see what they suggest for links based on the content of some of my emails ).
It's in beta testing right now (although nothing will be lost when they 'go live') and the only way to get into it is by invitation. I happen to have some invitations at the moment. They hand them out from time to time, in order to increase the user base without just opening it up to the public, which might be more use than they're ready for, I would guess.
So, it's kind of a geek thing...I have a Gmail account, d00d...but, people have been selling the stupid Gmail invites on fleaBay, if you can believe that. Weird.
So, if you want one...I need an email address to send the invite to. ;) |
