The OP-Pro is a great sounding preamp, but I find the output kind of low with it. How do you guys set the volume on the guitar when you play? Do you put it wide open then set your PA? Or do you crank it up at the mixer? Does having the volume up all the way on the guitar make a difference in sound quality? I have mine set to where I put the volume about 3/4 way to fingerpick. Sounds great through the PA system.

It's kinda strange. I have been an Ovation nut for 34 years but have only been "plugging in" for the last 4 months.
For my purposes the OP-Pro is fine, but of course I would not have anything to compare to.
Last time I practiced I had to turn the guitar volume up to over 50% just to have the amp louder than the guitar itself. I beleive I have the volume of my 30 watt amp at about "5". Next time I'll amp up to 8 and see how that affects things.

From both reviews and from my own personal experience checking out LX O's with the Op Pro system, the volume doesn't do much until you get it up to around 75% ... kinda the opposite of the volume of some old Fender amps, where by '3' they're so loud you can't stand it!

Maybe Ovation will address this strange volume potentiometer problem on newer models?

I think that the volume knob is designed to adjust the level very gradually so that it is easier to make minor adjustments. I have found that the slider type volume controls on the older pre-amps tend to be very sensitive. I would barely move it and get a big increase/decrease in volume. This tends to be even more noticable when playing at "gig" volumes. I think that the knob on the new pre-amp is a big improvement.

I've never played an Op-Pro in a live situation, but would definitely agree with John that the gradual "ramping" of the volume (and the big knob) would be an improvement. Both of my gig guitars (an FET3 and an Op-X) are played through a PA at considerable gain. Adjusting the volume can be a considerable pain as I find myself making rapid little "tweaks" (that make considerable changes) back & forth to the desired level. Touching a nice big knob and giving it a "swing" when needed would be much more desireable.
