On the other hand, I have friends at Longboat Key, and Punta Gorda. These are no more. Punta Gorda is a complete loss, in many ways worse than Hurricane Andrew, since much of Punta Gorda was mobile homes, and these just do not fare well in a big blow. Longboat Key suffered substancial damage. Friends in Bradenton report minor damage. Friends in Clearwater report no damage, and hardly any rain and wind. I've not had the opportunity to find out anything yet about Sanibel and Captiva islands. These are very low, and contain nearly no substancial buildings. The vast majority of those buildings are wood frame structures, and many are quit old. Inland... I cant say. I have friends out in Myacca City, and I their phones are still out, and cell service for them is also out for some reason. I have a friend in Lake Mary outside of Orlando, no report from her yet. Local churches and businesses are gathering food and clothing to help the 1000's of homeless in Punta Gorda and out areas. Much of Ft. Meyers area is quite low, built on the banks of river. Nothing has been said of these areas yet. Prayers for the homeless and survivors would be a good thing.

Four houses back from the intra-costal (the little bay in between the barrier islands of the Gulf of Mexico & the "mainland"), we were pretty nervous. Yes, we were in evacuation Zone A, but decided to wait until 11 AM Friday to make the final call on a bug-out (what with the cats, bird, & all...). The police did a drive-by loudspeaker broadcast message Thursday night about getting the heck out. Pretty spooky stuff. I was ready to leave if the track of the storm put it just north of us (worst-case scenario with huge storm surge that probably would have put our house under water). Thankfully (for us) it didn't. But that's exactly what did happen on Sanibel Is., Fort Meyers, etc. I've been down by where it hit several times over the years, and it is one of the most intensely beautiful areas of the country I have ever seen. My heart & prayers really go out to anyone affected. It very easily could have been us instead of them. As for St. Petersburg, it didn't even rain here. I couldn't believe it. Now we're watching Earl very closely.

My thoughts and prayers are definitely with the folks in the Ft. Meyers / Punta Gorda area. The footage I've seen in the last couple days of all the devastation is hauntingly too familiar, as I was living in Miami in '92 when Andrew hit. Jeff
