Location: Hicksville, NY | Call me crazy, and although I do not own a guitar that costs over a grand, I do pamper them a bit too much. That being said, I'd been thinking about purchasing a "beater" that sounds good, but won't cost me an arm and a leg. I'm thinking in the price range of about $300 -- give or take a few. To date, the Applause AE48 has been getting a lot of my attention.
My question ... before I make the purchase, does anyone have any thoughts, likes, dislikes, etc., about the AE48? I would love to hear from you.

Location: Central Oregon | I have a thought on an AE48- I think I'd use my $300 to buy an American made used Ovation off of ebay. Since you're looking for a beater you can get a damn nice USA made Ovation with a little cosmetic damage for $300 or less easily.

And, just because you would be buying a "better" Ovation does not make it a delicate piece of glassware. All Ovations are built tough. The better the model, the better the sound.

Here, here. I take my Elite out into the wilds of the backyard and even had it on the beach up in Traverse City for a week (surprisingly, not a grain of sand in it). 'Course, I don't have wild parties at the house, and the only drunk at the cottage was me, but...I think they can handle the environment.
I vote for: Throw out the Applesauce and buy a used Elite! (with a five piece neck...all the chicks dig 'em!) |

Location: Hicksville, NY | Thanks for the idea Nils. I never thought of that option, and it's a good one to think about. After a 7 year hiatus, I started playing again, and it's such a good feeling to get back at it. Besides rebuilding callouses, I'm also getting back to performing with friends, family members, and in public once in a while. I also noticed that I also travel quite frequently in the process.
I really love my guitars and I don't mind carrying them around locally ... it's when I have to go to faraway places that I begin to worry. Years back, despite the protection of a HC, the neck of the guitar I used to own was damaged from the way it was treated by baggage handlers at the airport. I was really saddened by the experience, considering that I just owned it for less than a month at that time, and repairing or replacing the neck costed more than the guitar itself. On a brighter note, the guitar continued to play nicely, until it started to show signs of further damage ... it was then that I traded it in for a much better one -- my Ovation balladeer.
For the fear of reliving a similar (if not the same) experience, I thought of a beater that I can carry around anywhere and everywhere. Thanks again for the idea.
