a few years ago i saw a show hosted by david byrne at town hall. he gave a talk. the music was haitian and cuban voodoo and santaria. the audience danced. the point of it was that music taps into something inside of us, we are programmed to respond to certain rhthyms, certain melodies, certain harmony. A movie, can "move" us deeply, but music gets us in tune with the deeper things within us.

When was the last great movie you saw without a great soundtrack? I know that Full Metal Jacket and Platoon would have never been as good as they were without the music... I believe that the rise in music videos shows the strength of the visual and musical mediums... I can't help but remember the picture of the girl leaning over the fallen student at Kent State without hearing Steven Stills singing " now its time we stop children whats that sound, everybody look whats going down". Movies don't have the same affect without the music yet music can and does stand on its' own..

Kinda of off topic, but in line with where this topic has gone:
Music ability/appreciation/even necessity was instilled in mankind by God. It is one of the most powerful influences/teaching tools that is available to humans.

Think how many songs you can remember from your very earliest years. The first song that I remember learning and can still sing to this day, was a radio commercial for Burgermeister Beer in Oakland Ca. My dad convinced me to stop singing it!

Every culture from the most primitive to the most technologically advanced has music of some kind.

It is a big part of who we are, use it wisely.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programing.

The greatest movie of all time (!!), 'Citizen Kane.' Unless you count the opera singing girlfriend as soundtrack.

:D
