It amazes me that so many have mentioned Gary Moore. Since he went blues in the early 90's, I've really dug his stuff. But many guitar players I talk with don't even know who he is. In fact, I don't know anyone, other than you guys, who are fans. Pretty cool.

- Don "Buck Dharma" Roeser
- Randy Rhodes
- Slash (I didn't used to think so... but the "rock guitarst category is getting thin).
- Eddie Van Halen (also, doesn't do much for me, but does/did a lot for Rock'n Roll)
- Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) Not the greatest musician on the planet, but definately one of the great guitarsts on the rock scene.
- Bitchy Blackmore (pun intended)
- Steve Vai

I guess this begs the question "What is a rock guitarist?" Is it just musicianship, influence on the genre, attitude? A couple of great rock musicians who aren't normally sited for rock'n roll are Prince and Zappa. Even Roy Clarke used to "shred" long before it had a name.

Like lists?

I get a kick out of this type of thing....because it's only purpose is to promote the sale of guitar magazines......

Top ten. At what? Virtuosity? Technical expertise? Creative improvization? Best at making money? Influence on music? What type of music? You get the idea.

Some favorites are Chet and Les, Mark Knopfler, Chuck, BB, Phil Keaggy, Steve Howe is very gifted, Carlos, Frank Zappa, EC has made a name for himself, Wes Montgomery, Jimi.... These are just some of my favorites. I don't pretend to say they're best at anything, except makeing me smile.

I'm listing the guys (sorry, ladies!) I've actually seen in person. I believe I've lead a comparatively, sheltered life, but I still have most of my hearing left, too!!
Rory Gallagher-1978
Alvin Lee-1976
Steve Stills-1972
Pete Townsend-1976
Jerry Garcia-1976
Leo Kottke (sorry, not a rocker, but jeeeeez...)-1979
BB King (see above comment)-2003
Justin Hayward-1974
Martin Barre'-1977
Carlos Santana-1971
Neil Young-2002

Eleven. So, sue me.
