I am normally the bass player in our church, but whenever there is special music that our basic chord strumming guitarist can't master, I get to come off the bench. We did some special music for Father's Day today. The offertory song (Blessed Father) was written by the music minister and was an instrumental only version for the first several minutes before the soloist began to sing once the offering had been taken. The regular guitarist and I were swapped for the occassion, him on bass banging the root out as best he could on the downbeats and me with my month old LX front and center. The song called for some classical guitar like fills and even a touch of almost flamenco like picking before it settled down for the vocal solo. It was in the key of Em and as a result sounded soulful, and sorrowful. Very moving. This was all kind of freelanced and improvised as I went along as I have no formal training, just 30 years of having a guitar in my hands. This was my first experience with the LX run through the PA's in a "solo" type environment in that it was just me, the bass (such as it was), some cymbals and a very light background fill on the keyboard. The guitar was the main event. No blasting choir vocals to overpower us. No offkey congregational singing to clash with us. The LX sound was in a word...spritual. Through the 5ft tall mains, the guitar literally sang out. The sound was clear and piercing and the open low E was deep and full and resonant. I don't think I've ever sounded so good in my life. At the end of service, the soundguy and the music leader came up to me and told me the sound had been unbelievable. The regular guitarist uses a Takamine. The sound guy said that the difference in sound had been dramatic and he'd had to pretty much remove all the tweaking and equalizing he cranks in for the other guy and was going to have a fun time getting it all reset next week. The regular guitarist, who has razzed me a few times about my "plastic guitar" came up sheepishly and shook my hand, acknowledging the sound as pretty great. He bought his Takamine 2 weeks before I bought my LX. He paid 100 bucks more too! Sorry for the long tale, but I am still buzzed from the whole thing. Maybe it was a God thing, but that LX was singing like the angel's harps today. Well done Big O! This will be the last guitar I ever own, period!

That is awesome. It makes me really go nuts as I wait for my 1777LX to return to the store and they send me a new one due to deffects in the finish. I am dying to play mine at church and here what she sounds like. I know my 18 year old Ultra sound pretty good through it. Our other guitarist has an older Balladeer, but he insist in running through his electric guitar amp, so it doesn't sound very good to my ears. It is going to be a long 2 weeks while these guitars are in "transit". I am glad your music went so well. I know how those moments are and they are not soon forgotten.

That was a beautiful vignette of what it is all about! Instruments that do what we need them to do! It is a blessing. I enjoyed what you had to say and I especially liked the Takamine Twist of Fate!! I don't spout that Ovations are the "only" guitar but like Matt Smith alluded to - they do what we need them to do!

I do disagree with your one point:

"This will be the last guitar I ever own, period!"

Wait until the 12 string LX comes out before you say that! It will only get better! ;)
