Location: Lincoln, Nebraska | I've been through quite a journey looking for the ultimate strings for my Custom MM68 (Adamas!) Mandolin. As you know, with the ball-end (albeit a superior bridge system, as far as I'm concerned), it limits our choice in packaged strings from other manufacturers.
The phosphor bronze never gave me the warmth I wanted for jazz and classical, so I'd purchase guitar singles, and make up sets out of Elixir, Martin SP, and the D'addario EXP. These were all fine, but my latest discovery is a real, "Ah HA!"
I use the Thomastik mandolin (loop end) on my traditional axes, and am hooked. (Pardon the pun...) But I recently discovered Thomastik DOES make a ball end set, the 154K that are specfically for us electric players.
They're expensive, but very warm, last five times as long as anything else I've tried, and have a wonderful, smooth, flatwound feel. Plugged in, they are to die for, so they are a terrific recording set.
Anyone interested in these can Email me offline, and I can line you up with a set. |
