Interesting but predictable. I just did an A/B/C experiment with a 2001 Collectors, Adamas and Adamas II. I sat in the same spot and played the same riffs while Lisa (who does not play) listened.

The results were predictable, but fun just the same. She chose the Adamas as the best (and also loudest) overall tone, but it was a hard choice. There was barely a noticiable difference between the Adamas and Adamas II and it required revisiting the instruments to actually make the choice. The cut-away was probably the cause of the subtle yet noticable difference in tone. The 2001 took 3rd place in this test, as it probably should have. I still like the tone of the 2001 Collectors a lot, because it is more subtle and more old wood sounding. Still an outstanding tone, and my personal favorite, but not an Adamas.

I guess the only thing this test did, especially considering I know the slothead would have been so far in first place if I had one.... is reenforce a quesstion that was asked earlier. Why must we "special order" the best sounding Ovations? Of at least the Adamas and Adamas II guitars tested, NONE are made today in production, and nothing in production sounds anything close to them.

Miles, you have just summed up all my bitching. Yes NONE of the best sounding Ovations are being made today. My point exactly. Like I said earlier, why do we have to special order the best sounding Ovations? Special order the best sound. Now that does not make much since to me. There was a time when the best sounding Ovations were standard issue. Miles, you and I have reached an agreement. Why is Ovations best sound in the past....Paul (DEEP BOWL) Hebert

The new Folklore has, from what I hear, a sound far surpassing anything Ovation puts out now. And even that was built on a limited basis.

Hopefully, those going to New Hartford will be able to play one. Compare it to Cliff's slothead and Paul T.'s Deluxe Balladeer. That should give people a range of really good sound that Ovation can produce.

That limited edition Fokelore they made last year was a great sounding guitar. Don't get me wrong on any of this, I think most Ovations sound better than any of the competition. Even when you get down to the ones in the under-600 street price range, they sound better than the competition in at least the same price range. I am, as I guess several others are, wondering why the best ones aren't being made, or need to be special ordered. I have no problem with the current Adamas and Melissa models, the Elite T or any of the newer guitars that sound great, just curious why the "greater" sounding ones got yanked.

Great idea, I have often asked my co-workers to do such tests for me (none of them play any instrument). The Adamas I almost always win (comments: warm and balanced, but on the darker side); the Adamas II is bright and pleasant but lacks the depth. Naturally, the comments are relative, since they are all exellent guitars holding on their own.

That said, the viper (66-96 edition) always gets the thumbs up when I use it on gigs. The marriage of electric and acoustic guitar is best shown here. It's too bad Ovation does not promote it enough, most fellow guitarist I know have never heard of it!?

Just me and my Adamas!
