Your question regarding 1991 on eBay ($799) vs 1991 from Alped ($1200):

The guiars should be the same. Even at $799, it is overpriced by eBay's as well as today's economic standard. The ebay seller tried to sell it several times, but no one wanted it. A more realistic price should be around $550.

Transaction prices for ovation collector's series at ebay (that I have seen for the past 12-24 months):

2002: $850-1000
2001: $900-1000
2000: $600-700
1999: $535-600
1998: $500-600
1997: $450-550
1993: $400-500
1990: $500

There are risks involved in buying expensive items from strangers on the internet. Mint item may turn out to be one with dings or dents or hairline cracks. That may explain why Alped's prices are higher.

Location: San Francisco, CA		The major problem for you is the hugh shipping cost. Paying $270 for shipping an Ovation to Asia is crazy. You need to figure it how to get the shipping cost down.

If you were in the US, you could get some really nice Ovation for $300-500.

Glenn Campbell, 1617, 1537, 1114, etc.

How much are Ovation & Adamas selling in Hong Kong? Ovation or Martin should be cheaper in HK than in the US.

Location: SoCal		This seems to be a two man conversation, so it's time to jump in with another opinion.

Jesse:

If you're looking for a traditional round hole Ovation that has a few years on it, I'd look for a mid 80's Legend with cutaway. The wood will be aged a bit, you'll have the A bracing, which I think gives a better sound than the VT8 (or whatever it was) bracing of the 70's, and, best of all, in either deep or shallow bowl, they come up on ebay all the time and can be had for $400-$600. Add on shipping to HK and you're looking at a mx of about $800. Not a bad price for an excellent instrument.

Note that you can get RT plane tickets to the US for $400-500. Spending $300 (s/h) on a $500-600 Ovation does not make sense.

The prices you quoted are just MSRP. Very similar to MSRP in the US. No one would pay MSRP, however.

Location: So. Cal.		I am originally from HK, I always stop by Tom Lee (only game in town) to check out their guitars. Ovations and Martins cost almost double compared to the US. I bought my original Legend in the 80's - only half of what it'd cost in the U.S.....
Anyway, Jesse - I don't recommend getting a used Ovation from U.S. to H.K. mainly because of the change in humidity. A brand new one adjusts better because of the relatively young age of the wood. A used one from most parts the US (low to zero humidity) will most likely not survive the extreme change in environment. Try getting an older Adamas and it might be different. Otherwise, go talk to some smaller music stores in Mongkok and Wan Chai; they might know somebody who wants to sell you their's.

Maybe Al is the only Ovation dealer that sells guitars at list.
