I've noticed that some of the solidbody Ovations have what appear to be initials writen in the pickup or bridge pockets under the clearcoat. Did the people at Ovation sign their work?

In many cases, especially early on... yes

Sometimes they were initials. Sometimes they were messages in code from Glen Campbell's mother seeking release. Other times they were a full name. I saw one that said "Bailey"

I mark every neck I carve With My Initials as do the other neck carvers/carver.This does not stay on the neck as the fitters grind them off when they fit the neck to the bowl. :p

An obvious forgery, all the ones I signed I used my initials "CWK2", and I only signed them in the San Diego area. I will note that I visited the Celebrity factory in 1954, right after the Korean War during a trip to Korea for Army Intelligence (There were rumors they were going to make a cheap copy of the Kaman helicopter but we determined that they, at that time were making weird shaped plastic woks for the Chinese that seemed to have a dual purpose and were black and shiny), we captured the factory and turned it over to the ROKS. I can't say anymore without getting into classified info.

Bailey,
That's OK, I have a TS clearance so we can discuss it further. Maybe offline in the interests of national security.

All I can say is if you look inside your vintage Ovation and see remnants of Chinese stir fry, you probably have a Chinese forgery with a North Korean bowl. The test is if you get hungry for more music shortly after you play a full set. This only applies to pre 1955 Ovations (for some reason they don't show up on the cross references). Excuse me, the CIA is at my door.
