The Glen Campbell Artist 1127 (K-1127) Ovation is the original 6 string model from the late 1960s. Anyone know how many of these were manufactured and what a guitar in good condition would fetch ? Is the 1127 totally accoustic or does it have a pick-up ? Anything I should look out for when buying this model (e.g. defects / affects of aging)? I would appreciate your help.

The GC Artist was actually the second GC model. The first was the GC Deluxe Balladeer. At best guess, only about 50-100 were built from the fall of 1968 thru, maybe, mid 1969. The GC Artist was in production from mid 1969 until 1983, about 14 years. In 1973 or 74, it was offered as an acoustic electric as well as just an acoustic. From the late 70's until 1983, I believe it was only offered as an acoustic/electric.

Personally, if you can't buy one of the very first ones from 1969 (which I think still had the X bracing, until about 1970 when it went to the VT bracing pattern, then I would look for one from the early 80's. These would have the Kaman Bar in the neck (spotted by no truss rod cover on the headstock). These would also have A bracing as opposed the the VT-10 which was in the 1970's guitars. Much much better acoustic sound.

Anybody else wanna take a crack at this?

By the way, welcome to the group.

OK, I've got 2 of these critters- both 1127-4 (natural top). "Connolly" is a 1981 neck- "regular trussrod" (#2369xx) that The MotherShip put a new A-brace top & Artist-depth bowl on.
The other is an unaltered 1974 instrument (#0344xx), with VT-bracing (which design has only 5 decreasing-length braces in the "V"?).
Sorry, but there's no comparison in the sound & playability. I'm kinda like Janis Joplin- just bury me with Connolly- best d**n gitter I own, easily. The Wizards in New Hartford really do great work.
Actually, the '74 1127-4 GC doesn't play badly, either. I love the neck profile on these guitars. Technically, they are classified as Legend models, right?
And yes, greetings & warmest welcome from Across-The-Pond!

You'll have a really hard time finding a 60's GC Artist outside of the USA, they're rare enough over there. If you are looking for a 60's Ovation a little closer to home I have a '68 shiny bowl, 5-point R/wood bridge, Deluxe Balladeer for sale.

Welcome home Killa, there has been some speculation, while you were out, as to which thread you were going to gun down first. ;) :)

I'm just funnin' wit yu man! ;) You're a great asset to the community here, you're very creative, it's refreshing to see how you tackle huge projects and get great results. I know that you've inspired me and probable 50 or more others here, to want to turn a wrench on a guitar, like you do. I appreciate that you are willing to share your knowledge and you're always helpful! I hope to meet you in person soon. When you see my face, you'll know what my problem is... I'm as stupid, as I look! lol :p phil

Know what you mean Phil. I can't play as good as I look, and I look terrible.

Gentlemen, there's ALWAYS room at the bottom. Membership dues in the Bottomfeeders Luthiery Guild are waived for the OFC. Just register at Jason's site.
And, I dunno, Jim- that menagerie you've got- might be a little high-toney. You really need a "beater", and post it to your Gallery. After all, the purpose is scraping bottom. You're on probation........NEXT?
