Location: ranson,wva | i started this project back in the summer and i finaly got the new top cut out and veenered, im getting ready to cut the hole for the cone and sound well but im kinda stumped, i got all the math and geomotry worked out, i know where the hole needs to go but not too shure how big to make it and how to hang the sound well. i was thinking of doing multi-soundholes as well..if temp,bill,miles or anyone else has any helpfull info i realy aprecaite it..thanks jason |

Location: Scotland | If you’re using a Spider cone you will need a 10.5 inch hole or 9.5 for a biscuit cone. For the spider type the actual hole will need to be very slighty bigger so the cone can be installed and removed without binding on the edge.
In this case the soundwell is just glued and clamped to the top. Bear in mind that Spider cones don’t actually need a soundwell. A lip around the hole to support the cone will work fine. If you install a soundwell you may need to support it from below. On Dobros with soundwells the soundwell connects the top to the back. |

Location: ranson,wva | thanks temp,since this is my first reso project i think im gonna go with a spider bridge without a soundwell,this ones gonna probly look like shit anyhow. is bill's a biscuit or spider bridge? if i do decide to use a biscuit could i support it with braces running from the sides of the bowl? thanks jason |

Location: NJ | If I hadn't packed-up MasterTempleman's ResOvation (yesterday) for upcoming TransAtlantic PingPong, I woulda' posted a pic of the inside to show what the guy who adapted it "did" . . .
Basically, a wooden ring that was glued/screwed to small, wooden blocks (of varying heights) that were epoxied to the inside of the bowl at strategic points to evenly support the ring . . .

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Depending on how hard you want to work at this, I suppose you could derive the contour of the bowl, directly below the hole in the top, and taper the soundwell ring to fit it. The spider cone design on my Matrix project was a lot easier, since I didn't use a soundwell. 1/8" ply top, with a 1" ply support ring. Getting it DEAD flat is the tricky part. Not all cones are DEAD flat, either!

Location: ranson,wva | i seen that this morning while i was having my honey nut cheerios and expresso..nice looking, i made my top out of a peice of 1/8in ply and covered it with a nice peice of burl crotch mahog..its do or die now, ive commited to the 10 1/2 in spider by cutting the top hole...we will se where it goes from here..jason |

Location: ranson,wva | i just relized after cleaning all the glue off the rim of the bowl where the plastic kerfing was glued that there is several spots that may be a problme, there is a few cracks i fixed with glass and resin,could i rebuild the small cracked rim with the same thing?? jason |

By the time you install the new kerfing & attach the new top, it should hold soundly, anyway. And, if you route the edge for new binding, even better. |
