Location: Syracuse, NY | Hello there. New to my Ovation Guitar, but so far very happy.
Just looking for suggesions/ideas on some equipment that can help with my goal of some basic home recording and enhancing my sound when (if) I ever play out. The "Total Solution" should not cost more than $200 to $400.
My first thoughts lean towards a multi-functional unit such as Line6's PodXT. But I am not sure these are "Acoustic/Electric Friendly". But this might give the idea of the type of unit I'm looking at. One that has multiple features and could, perhaps, directly interface with my PC. However, I am not against 4 individual pieces of equipment, if they are better to the task.

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I know people who use the POD and love them. If you want a series of stomp boxes, and still want to sound like an acoustic, then Sans Amp DI, an Optical Compressor and something to give your sound some depth like a reverb box. |

Location: Orange County, California | There are allot of recording/stompbox solutions out there from makers like D-tar, Fishman, LR Baggs, etc. I'm Borrowing a Boss AD-5, and it sounds pretty good, but I'm mainly using for the piezo bridge on an electric. There are others. The point I'll make though is that except for adding some effect or another, Ovations IMHO, don't need much processing to sound good. Maybe a little compression and slight EQ'ing to sound natural. That's it. That's all I'd do. |

Location: Toronto | I agree with Fred. I never plug my Ovations into my PODxt. I do use a Fishman blender (which is just freakin amazing), and lately I've used a Behringer Acoustic DI which does a nice job of bring out the sound (and is priced under $40). Both of these do an easier job of bring out the sound. They all work - but the POD is a tweakers heaven - lots to learn, lots to download, and lots to tweak...

Location: Round Rock, TX | I use a Boss AD-8 on everything piezo (Ovations, RMC'ed electrics, etc.), except the VIP preamp. It's very nice for tailoring the sound (body and string emphasis) and adding a little ambience/reverb. It also has a GREAT tuner (I believe it's the same circuit as the TU-2). I wish it had a chorus as well, but other than that I really like it for fine tailoring of the sound. I have a PODxt Live for magnetic pickups, but you'd really have to tweak hard to get it to sound good with an O. Much easier to run it nekkid. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | I like the Aphex Acoustic Exciter . It's very transparent and does not add any noise or volume. It works great to fill out the bass and make the total sound more natural. It has the DI out also. Good bang for the buck at $99. |

Location: Chicago area | I use a Boss AD-5 and it does a good all around job of taming the piezo, and good tone shaping controls. I particlarly like the "mic distance" setting, and I usually do not use the "body" setting as it sounds too modelled for me. I use a bit of reverb (depends on location as I have reverb in Ultrasound Amp too), but I wish the Chorus had some more controls. I don't use much Chorus, but I would like to be able to adjust settings (speed/depth). I am considering adding a Boss CH-1 or CH-5 to the chain. Other than that, the tone is in the fingers...right? |
