Hi Ovation Fan Club,
Could you please help. I am not musical and have no experience of guitars. I just want to help my young nephew.

My fourteen year old nephew has been given an old "Matrix by Ovation" guitar. Looking through the sound hole two numbers can be seen. One is labelled as the Model Number and the other is not labelled but I have assumed is the Serial Number. The numbers are:

Model No: 1142-4
Serial No: 110796

The guitar appears to be in very good condition. However, he has been told it has faulty "electronics". When the guitar is connected to his guitar amplifier it appears that the guitar is outputting no electrical signal at all. The "electronics" are indeed not working.

I have done some research on the web. The Matrix, an electro-acoustic guitar, is fitted with a piezoelectric pick-up. This type of pick-up has a high input impedance. Consequently, a internal pre-amp is required which is normally powered by a battery. Looking through the sound-hole I can just see what looks like a small circuit board with wiring going to the pick-up, tone control knobs and jack. I cannot see any battery compartment or holder.

Is there a service manual for the Matrix? I would be extremely grateful for any advice?

Please note I'm located in the United Kingdom.

The Matrix had a passive system, no batteries. It's unlikely to be the pickup at fault. Probably just a short or dry joint. Any competent tech should be able diagnose the fault and fix it if it is repairable.

Best bet will be to junk the existing electronics and instal a more up to date active system
