Location: Pennsylvania | Hi. This is my first post here. I was in GC yesterday looking to trade my Taylor 614CE for something else. I love Taylor guitars, but my problem is, that the ES system gets real harsh when set a high volume levels, and other area's of the tone have to be sacrificed with EQ to get it to sound less harsh.
I don't play proffessionally, but i do play through my PA alot, and plan to play at an open mic soon, and needed something that sounded good un=plugged as well as plugged in at performance level.
Anyway, i saw this 2006-FKOA sitting there. The guy said that someone had special ordered it, and changed his mind. It had just come in the day before (i know i did not see it there the other day), so i played it a little. It sounded sweet, so i asked him for a cable so i could plug it in to an acoustic amp. I cranked it up to even past performance level, and it sounded awesome. I even kept everything set flat on both the amp and guitar. I then asked him to plug me into a PA system, and it sounded even better than awesome at high levels.
So... I traded my Taylor 614CE even up for it, plus he threw in some picks, a strap, and 2 sets of strings. I know the 614 is quite a bit pricier than the 2006-FKOA, but it still seemed like a good deal to me, and it's a collectors edition... :)
I cannot find any reviews on this guitar, and was wondering if anyone has any information on it, or ownes one even.

Wow...traded your Taylor straight up for an Ovation. Your our hero.
However...stick around a while and you will find that we are unusually more open to other quality brands of guitars than you might expect from a fan club.
It's no secret here that I really like the '06 Koa. At the annual factory tour we were able to preview this guitar 7 months before it was released.
That sweet plugged in sound you hear comes from the new VIP modeling preamp. The Koa was the first model to get it. Ovation...already known for it's plugged in sound, has made a quantum leap with this one. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | I believe Guitarist magazine in the UK reviewed the 2006 Collectors a couple of months ago and wasn't that impressed with it. Haven't seen any other reviews.
I tried one at Elderly Instruments and thought it was OK, but not as good as the 2005 Collectors. But as long as YOU are happy with it, that is what matters!!!!

Location: Boise, Idaho | There is definitely a distinctive sound to the Koa. Maybe it was just a new guitar sound that I'm not familiar with. Only strange thing was it had to be plugged in to use the tuner. Maybe there wasn't a battery in it. |

bobc... The "plug in for the tuner" feature is the way it was made. We have expressed our collective dislike and perhaps that will be changed in future versions. Or...perhaps not.
I was shopping for a new guitar a couple months ago. It came down to the Koa or an Adamas. I went with the Adamas......this time.

Welcome! D'oh, I missed that one completely! I had been looking forward to checking it out. It musta gone back into the case pretty early.
The one with the blow-hole sure looks nice! Hopefully they use some of those ideas in an upcoming Collector's... |

Location: SoCal | They had one at the local GC, sold quickly...was talking to Al today - he has one in stock...hmmmm.
Only one of three guitars (unplugged) that would cut through the peripheral noise at NAMM. And, I love Koa. From reliable sources, Martinneli is no longer producing Koa tops...due to scarcity and restrictions. I have an all-Koa Martin and wouldn't consider a trade for less than an original slot-head. |

Location: Pennsylvania | Thank you all for your input. I am new to Ovations, although i had one about 25 years ago, but back then i did not know anything about guitars except how to strum a few chords.
I don't know if any of you have played or heared a Taylor with an ES, but they get really harsh when played at high volume levels. If you cut the mids you can tame most of it, but then you are sacrificing good parts of the tone as well.
This 2006-FKOA sounds great at high levels without cutting the mids. Infact i have just been playing with everything set flat, and a 50/50 mix between the images and the USD. It also sounds great unplugged as well.
This is one awesome guitar.

IMHO....the koa is closer to the sound of a quality wood box guitar than other roundbacks I have played. It lacks the typical Ovation brightness (because of the koa maybe?) but still has the high level of projection, intonation and playability you expect from an Ovation.
I like the 50/50 mix also.
I think I've spent more time test driving this guitar than any other. I wonder why I don't own one?
Oh yeah...I remember...I bought a UTE. |
