You see lots of threads on other fora about 'what songs soond good on a 12-string?'. I alway thought these were pointless, that any song would sound good on any nice guitar played well. HOWEVER - I was strumming a very simple 3-chord version of U2's 'I still havent found what I'm looking for' and realised that the octave pairs can give some nice effects. Must call Edge and tell him to get himself a nice Ovation 12-string and throw away the pedals. (everyone in Ireland knows each other you know).

So what songs sound good on your 12-string?

No rules....try it, rearrange it, play it and if it sounds good on a 12, then you have just added one to the repertoire.

On the rare occasions I play strumming songs, I almost always find myself taking down the 12 string and strumming that. Twice the notes for the same strum.

My Custom Balladeer 12-er was my main guitar for 20 years. It sounded great no matter what song I played. I recently find myself finger-picking my 12-strings more and more.

I'm into the "play whatever ..." but there ARE certian songs intros that I do find myself gravitated to whenever I pick up a 12-string. Sorry, some of these are really lame but they just call "12" to me ... Intro's only :

Give A Little Bit - Supertramp
Northern Lights - Renaissance
Still You Turn Me On - Greg Lake
And You And I - Yes
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zep (sorry)
Cinema Show - Genesis
Free Falling - Tom Petty
Narnia - Steve Hackett
From The Beginning - ELP
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Kashmir - Led Zep
Every Woman - Dave Mason

OK maybe not the best songs ever but for whatever reason they are just fun (to me) to play on a 12 string.

These Days, As the Raven Flies - Fogelberg

Most any Roger Hodgsen (Supertramp) guitar based song, as they were written on 12 string by a 12 string player.

edit: Dave, I happen to like all those songs too.

I know it's been done before, but I like when topics like this are brought back to life.

Especially this one now that I've been playing the 12 string CUstom Elite LX for the last few weeks... A bunch

I've been playin some songs exclusively on the 12 now, some favorites are DMB's "Typical Situation" and "Grace is Gone", and Young's "Needle and the Damage Done", and "I Am A Child".

I've been working out a 12 string version of Tesla's "Love Song", and was planning to attempt a major endeavor. Doing an alternate tuning and trying Zep's "The Rain Song" on it. Not really a practical thing to do unless you have a 12 dedicated for that one song, but I think it'll sound VERY nice.

It does sound great on a 12-string.

. . for about the first three-and-a-half years of playing it at EVERY f&^$*'g gig . . .

. . after that, y'start doing really horrible things to the lyrics . . . just t'make it "fun" again (to a degree).

I've got an old Pacemaker that I keep tuned to "G" for stuff like "TheRainSong" . . .

"Nights in White Satin"
"Lucky Man"
"Working Class Hero" (the simplest song on the planet)
"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
"Hotel California"
"Dust in the Wind" (Chord version, for those of us who cannot Finger-pick)

Just about anything I play on my 12-er's make me sound like I know what I am doing.

Yes, I know there are no rules but as I thought, people tend to prefer particular songs/genres on particular guitars and I'm just on a journey of discovery with my recently acquired 1615. It just adds layers of texture to the most basic cowboy chords. Flatpicking Irish trad tunes also works well - a bit mandolin/bouzouki-ish. Must try DADGAD tuning next...

I have three pieces written for the 12 strings that sounds killer, but they're pretty tough:

Queen: '39
Queen: Love of my life (live with Ovation legend!)
Boston: Amanda

Starway to heaven sounds good on 12 strings as well.

I forgot small instrumental from Malmsteen at the end of the album Odyssey: memories, for a couple of 12 strings.

Have you Americans heard of an Aussie band called 'The Church' from the '80s?

Their guitarist (Peter Koppes) works at the same college as me. He told me that \'Under The Milky Way\' was written for a pair of 12 stringers. (one capo'd at the 5th)

(BTW, that's Peter at 3:00/4:58)
