So has the 1777LX officially replaced the 1867?
I notice Musicians Friend has completely dropped the 1867, but is carrying the 1777LX at the same price.
And what's the difference between the 1867 and the 1777 anyway?

Location: closely held secret | Thanks for the info, Steve. I had a deep bowl Ultra for 5 years - I like the shallow bowls. But you never know, maybe after the smoke clears from my last 2 purchases.... |

Location: Charlotte, NC | It appears that Musicians Friend just recently dropped the 1867. The price was down to $699 just before that. May be the same going on with the non-LX 1777. :confused: They now show no more Blacks and limited quantities on the Naturals. Purchased my Black 1777 from them for $699 and it must have been one of the last ones. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | My understanding from several people (usually when you hear the same thing from multiple sources it's true), is that Ovation USA is dropping supershallow bowls. The 2005 catalog makes no reference to supersjhallow bowls either. I guess you could probably custom order one. The imports Celebrity and Applause will be the only sources for SS. Is this what others have heard as well? It was certainly obvious at NAMM. All USA models were deep, mid or contour bowls (I think). Dave |

When you decided to buy that 1867 Legend, you did so because you thought it sounded fantastic, it played really well and for the money, you just couldn't get anything better.
It's the same freaking guitar.
Sure, the LX crap is out, but if you are just going to chase the 'latest and greates' (like some car buyers I know), you will never be satisfied.
True happiness comes not from getting what we want, but wanting what we have. You have a wonderful instrument that will serve you well for a lifetime...or longer! See the market for what it is...a big game. The manufacturers have to keep changing the models...otherwise nobody will buy the 'old' stuff. Look at how many iterations of the fabled 'Les Paul' there are (one piece, sandwich, maple neck, artist signature, blah blah blah).
Some have opined that my (well, not just mine, but all) of the 1868 Elites (the younger sibling to your Legend) are thin and trebly sounding. I don't hear it that way. It's my favorite guitar (followed closely by the Hamer and the Cropper) and frankly, I don't give a flying rats patoot what someone else thinks of my guitars...if I did, I wouldn't have bought a couple of Peavey's, hahahaha.

Location: SoCal | Let's never buy cars or computers. Hell, in 2 years they won't be worth anything and something newer and better will be coming out. But don't buy that either, for the same reasons.
Jeez, why worry about it. If you bought the super shallow bowl because it suited your needs, then why the f*@k would you want an LX? Be happy with what you got. But if your not, don't bitch and moan about it here. You won't get any sympathy. |

Sorry for the snifflin, my Legends are still the envy of all my friends, even though they don't have the guts or panache to play O's.
And yes, they are the guitars I bought because I liked the way they sounded.

My newest Ovation is a 1993 Adamas I 12 string. My main 6 string is a 1983 1537 Elite. Do I like what Ovation is building now, you betcha! Would I like to own some of the new guitars, again, you betcha! Do I feel like I've got inferior guitars because Ovation's building something different? Hell no!
Be happy with what you own and play and don't worry about everything else. 90% of the music you play comes from you, not the guitar. Of course, that puts me in serious trouble...... |

I'll adopt your attitude! I've played a lot of guitars and the O's I now own (or at least caretake) are easily the finest instruments it's ever been my pleasure to hang on my neck. I guess I was just jealous of the choices some of you have when you just want to pick something off the wall to play with.
I'll have to continue convincing my wife of the fun and profit in collecting and trading O's!
(I'm glad I'm not a keyboardist. Wouldn't want to be accused of pianist envy). |

I just got a Legend 1867 here in Mexico. It was made in the States in 1996 and I think it was a great deal. The guitar´s in excellent condition and sounds great. I got it for 350 USD, original hard case included. I am very excited about this instrument and hope I can keep it for a lifetime without any problem.
It´s kind of funny but I thought exactly what Moody says about cars when I was returning home after buying the Legend and I saw the car I was gonna get me last year. If I would have bought the car then I wouldn´t have been able to get me the Legend. Then I could feel the pride of owning an Ovation and believe me, the car was no match for it.
Here´s a question: Can I use nylon strings on the Legend and which brand do you recommend? Thanks!

Location: Boise, Idaho | Don't do it Luis. You'd have to carve wider slots in the nut and who knows what else. You would do better by buying a Classic or one of the other models designed for nylon strings. You also have a choice of 1 7/8 or 2 inch necks with a flat fretboard and a cedar or spanish pine top that are designed for nylon strings. Don't ruin a great guitar by trying to make it do something it wasn't designed for. I love having several different guitars (all Ovations) for different purposes. I'd offer to trade you for my Classic, but I like it too much. Try to find a 1624 or 1674 if you like the narrower neck.
By the way, I never have buyer's remorse for cars, only seller's remorse. |

Location: SoCal | Luis, don't even think of putting nylon strings on your legend. Along with everything Mark said, the top of your legend is built for steel strings. Nylon strings on your guitar wouldn't drive the top. Along with being a lot of work to get the guitar set up for it, it would sound like crap. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Waskel, I have a non-LX 1777 that I bought as the LXs were coming out and I've never regretted it. I chose it over a 6778LX-NEB at Elderly. If you like your 1777, be happy. I don't think the 1777LX is a quantum leap over the 1777 (the 1771LX over the 1771 is another matter, IMHO).

| Heh, nearly a year after the thread started... Waskel has bought AND sold a 1777LX. I hope another old thread doesn't pop up in which he voices dissatisfaction over the selfsame LX I'm expecting to arrive any day. Waskel, did you wind up selling the 1867, among your many gear changes? |

Location: closely held secret | Yep. When I got the LX. I'm playing more acoustically these days and the SS bowl just didn't cut it, tone-wise.
No, I'll never complain about the 1777-LX. It really is a sweet guitar, but I needed to thin the herd a bit. I know it'll get played more with you. |

Dave I don't know for sure Dave, but the Ovation site just recently added 1861LX and 6868LX to the list of current LXs. Both are shallow bowls. Last year I read where Rick Hall said no more SS USAs for sale in the US, only for export mostly to Asia. Then I think Al told me that they had decided to start selling the SS bowls again here. Personally , I'm glad they did - they filt my round bowl better! |
