Someone should steal this parlor for $800, then turn around and quickly sell it for $1200!

We have an absurd market out there.

It would be interesting if those making pricing statements would back it up with the specific basis for their judgement, as well as what makes them the definitive 'expert'.
I agree that it is overpriced today at $800. I base this on what I see on the local CL and KSL.com ads, and my personal experience trying to sell or trade guitars. This is due to what you accurately describe as an absurd market.

The parlor is a great guitar, and a very nice condition used one should fetch $1k or more in a healthy market. It is a remarkably nice sounding guitar with the typical excellent USA Ovation craftsmanship.

The only reason it is not worth more than $800 today is that it cannot be resold for more than $800 next week. The 6778LX in mint condition that I paid $700 for about four years ago can't even generate phone calls today at $500. It is a far better guitar than $500 should command.

If someone wants a nice parlor to keep and love, and if one of those two is in excellent condition, the price is a bargain. If someone wants to sample a parlor for a few months and then resell it, those prices are risky.

The only thing I am the definitive expert on is my opinion.

I am basing my "it is worth $800" on the fact that I owned one once for a short time. (Maybe babysat would be a better word.) Believe me, if I hadn't been obligated to give it up after a year, I would still own it, never sell it, play it every day, and cherish it always. If I weren't a bit overextended right now, I would happily pay $800 for this one. As a matter of fact, even though it would not be wise to spend the money right now, I am considering it anyway. I LOVED that guitar!

Yeah, I think that's an Elite Prototype, not a Japanese market specific model like the P777 and the P778's.

I actually have a parlor Elite - PG18-X. Posted a couple of pics of it on the ning site but haven't been able to transfer copies here.

And no, it's not for sale.

I'm only an expert of my personal opinion also, and based on a comparison of other Ovation guitars selling today, I wouldn't give over $600 for one. They're smaller and took less materials to make, and they ARE used. I saw one sell not too long ago on Ebay for about 450, and I've seen Adamas IIs going for around $800+. I know, I know, they're probably great instruments and are much better than their non-O counterparts, and are considered rare, but in todays market I don't see them worth much more than 600. If they're such a great deal at $800, then why haven't they been snatched up by now? The one in Syracuse has been on the market for quite some time now and hasn't sold. JUST my opinion. If someone disagrees with my opinion, PLEASE prove me wrong and buy one of these for yourself. My feelings won't be hurt (:

The answer to the question probably depends what your real need is. If you need (want) a parlor guitar for some specific reason, in my opinion there are far better ones than an Ovation. But if you are an Ovation geek and want to add a different flavor of roundback to your collection than the 97 Collector is pretty cool.

I agree ... One of these would never be my go-to guitar for gigging, but it definitely falls under the "nice to have" category.

For what it's worth, this guitar is still available. (perhaps the price is now negotiable)

For those who wrote to me privately about this guitar, I re-iterate: This is a Craigslist ad in my area, it is not my instrument and I have no affiliation with the deal - hence the PSA (Public Service Announcement) tag - for the information of the group.

Cheers, Pete

Heading up tomorrow morning to check this one out. See how much I'll have to spend and what condition it's in.

Here's another one for less, but she's really seen some abuse. Perhaps a mothership nominee:

Man, that sure sounds like a certain dedicated guitar accumulator that used to hang around these parts…

…let us know how the guitar looks, and what you'd like to trade it for…  ;)

I believe the wide neck versions had a "W" on the label.

Well, this one made it home with me. Talked the guy down on the price a little, but a darn fine little guitar it is.

Looks nicer in your pictures. Congrats! I think I'd still rather have the slothead version though. I LOVE the burst on this one though.

I used to be enamored with slot heads, but lately have been moving to solid pegheads. I know a couple of knowledgeable friends that agree this guitar sounds better than the 97 collector. (one friend has both one of these and a 97)
