Good price. No idea if they'll ship.

Here's one with a metal fingerboard (I think) that is on fleaBay for only $395!

And all this time we've been charging $125 a pop for ours, with cases... Silly Old Farts! :p

I emailed the guy.
Might grab this one for my Boy or, just to have an Academy cause folks here seem to have a lot of good stuff to say about them.
I think they look pretty neat.

He answered my e-mail.
He said he "can't" ship it.
I gather that to mean he doesn't want to bother.
Oh well.

Thanks R, I was leaning towards the Academy cause I like how it looks, I'd said I was thinking about getting it for my boy but it was probably more for me to be completely honest.

Anyway, my Son is using his 77 CB beater so there's no real hurry, I plan on getting him something nicer a little down the road.

Academy is a highly under rated guitar. Of all the ovations that I have gone through, to this day I still keep the Academy and play it often. It just mades you sort of "smile" to think how cheesy it is (a completely plastic guitar) yet sounds amazingly good.

Looking at that KA17, I am guessing that it is an aluminum neck...

One of yours has one... Do they cause any problems?

It's my understanding the KA-14 was solid-head aluminum while the KA-17 was slot-head wooden. I know there was some discussion about that a while back, but this is the way I believe it to be.

If you look at the ebay pics, it looks like the KA-17 board is some kind of light colored wood, stained black. You can see the wear along the bass edges too.

The only issue with the aluminum boards is that the frets don't have a nice 'finished' feel; they are rough textured and squared off. Not an issue if you never ever bend a note. The Applause family (including the Academy and Matrix) had a thin chrome plating of some sort on the frets. This wears off, chips off, etc., and generally perpetuates some of the negative stuff about Applauses. I've taken two AA-14s and an AA-24, all three with horrific "fret" wear, and leveled/crowned/polished them. The result is a fingerboard that feels "as good as any".

My tan KA-14 had a terribly distorted top. I installed a homemade Bridge Doctor and all is happy now. Not a big BD fan but ya do what ya gotta do....

Not sure if I've ever seen a KA17 with an aluminum fretboard. But anything is possible.

OH! Okay... I was just thinking that must have been a metal fretboard.
I would figure that if you stained a wood fingerboard that the stain would sink-in.
I didn't realize anybody would really Paint a blond wood for a fingerboard.

[I need to quit looking at that... ]

"the KA-14 was solid-head aluminum while the KA-17 was slot-head wooden."

While I can't speak for the model numbers.. a more simple version is:

solid headstock = Aluminum
Slotted headstock = Wood
