Location: Europe | It might sound a treacherous question here, but frankly I am also attracted by the guitar constructions of Cole Clark, asides Ovation.
I found out that they actually do resemble in some aspects... they both are made of special material (australian bunyas vs. lyrachord - swearing for their own each of course), both use a piezo-electronic pickup system with unique preamps, and even in their shape they aspire for an optimum of sound vibration-gathering and concentrating by bowl-shaped backs or carvings inside, and pickups on the top vibrating plate,
experimenting with CNC routing vs Audio signature system.
I wonder if someone ever had the opportunity to compare them side by side...?
Or just might has an opinion... |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | Bobbo's Cole Clark was a Fat Lady 2 and it was a really nice playing and sounding guitar.
It was constructed like any other woodbox guitar. I have never seen a Cole Clark with a bowl-shaped back.
What model are you looking at that has it??? |

Location: Tennessee | Bobbo sez he still has his Ovations, but his ColeClark has moved on.
Here's the fine print: I had a CC FL2AC with the Australian Bunya top, Tasmanian Blackwood back and sides, Queensland Maple neck and body bindings, and rosewood fingerboard with block MOP inlays. Nut width was 1 3/4, or whatever is close to that in mm. Preamp was gen1 with the dual pickup and facebrace sensor. It was so right in so many ways ... the build quality was superb, it felt and played very smooth, it was built with an eye on plugging in, it had some really cool wood and in it's own way was as visually stunning as any guitar I've ever had hands on. I really liked that guitar.
But it moved on ... for primarily three reasons: 1) I wanted to thin the herd and the CC was not a "go-to" guitar for me so it made the list. Unplugged, I have several other guitars that always get picked up. Plugged in, I've pretty much defaulted to a handful of other guitars that work better for me. So I chose the ColeClark to sell because ... 2) It would fetch 2-3X what any of my Ovation would get in today's market, and to be honest, my 1537 or 1651JL3 or 07BCS or Book or K1111 are all better guitars. And dollar for dollar, there is NO contest, because ... 3) the Cole Clark didn't have "my" sound. What I play and how I play it could never really meld with the way the Fat Lady could sing. I played her out a few times and it didn't sound right to my ears as I was used to, and in the dozen or so recordings I've made in the past four or five years it never got used. It's not that the sound is bad, it's just different and not me. Actually now that I think back on it, it reminded me of the great majority of all the Taylor guitars I've played and heard. I think you either like that sound or it's not you. It was fun for a little while, but in the long run not me at all.
So about 60 days ago it went to a very stoked fan and I got nice $$$ out of it. We're all happy. |

I don't find that one great article i read about this back then, but maybe noticable is the little bulge that the back plates have here:

but generally i meant bowls for ovations, the "or carvings" referred to the cclarks. Carving they mention all around the internet, relating to the face brace sensors. |
