This is just the drop in pre-amp that fits in the op-pro, etc slots. I am replacing a perfect condition VIP pre-amp for a more standard pre-amp as I just want a more straight forward pre-amp.

$175 shipped to you...

This will not fit in the OP24 slot and the VIP has modeling functions that are supposed to be related to the guitar it was built for. It would be an awkward and expensive "upgrade" that probably wouldn't be an improvement in the sound. You'd have an onboard tuner, but then you'd have to plug in every time to use it.

If you're going to go to the trouble of retrofitting an OP preamp to your guitar (it's been done) go to the OP-Studio instead of the VIP.
You'll be happier with the results.

"Wabbit"and Mark,

Aside from the obvious PITA of plugging something into the jack to use the tuner and the stated frequent battery changes, What are the actual differences between the VIP and the OpPro Studio? I thought the OpPro Studio was just the VIP with the kinks worked out. Am I misinformed?

Yes.
The VIP uses "Virtual Image Processing" - it comes loaded with 5 "images", theoretically designed to be used in a specific model of O or A.
From the Ovation site:
"Using spectrographic analysis, the pickup output is compared to the spectrograph of the recorded sound. The signal is then sent through approximately 1000 filters and shaped exactly like the recorded sound."
There's a blend slider to mix the wet and dry signals. I've had mixed success with the VIP, not even counting that you need to plug in to activate the tuner, and the thing seems to eat batteries for snacks.
There's a PDF for the VIP5 here.

The Studio is more a variation of the OP-Pro, with higher output. Others here could probably describe it better (don't own one, but have played with several). The Studio has a "drive" control (harmonic enhancement, or exiter) and an onboard compressor/limiter.
There's a PDF for the Studio here.

Doesn't the Studio also have to be plugged in to work the tuner? Don't know why, but I was thinking that only the OP Pro doesn't have to be plugged in...

I have the Op Pro Studio installed in my MS- rebuilt Custom legend and I just put one in my Adamas II. The tuner works great - no plug-in required. It really brings out that nice deep growl of the 1581-8. I have the VIP that came standard on the 2007BCS Collectors. I don't really have a problem with it except when playing with the band I have to tweek it a bit to blend in. I have a new VIP that I'm waiting to install in something, just haven't figured out which one yet. Now that I've read your comment about it possibly being designed for a specific model, I'd better call Kim and get the skinny before I install it. If that is true, I'll need to sell it and get another Studio.

Vince, it's not like it's going to hurt anything. If you have something else with a Pro or Studio, just pop the VIP in and see how it sounds. From what I understand it's just 'optimized' for a certain model.

If you have both of them, why are you asking us what the differences are?

I have an Op-24 on my 1768C and I am looking at bidding on the blue Aqdamas 12 string that is up for sale, which also has the Op-24. Either way, SOMETHING is going to upgraded from a 24. I also have the OP-24 on my Elite Bass. If I don't sell that, it is going to see an upgrade also. Probably an Op Pro, But I don't know yet. The original idea was the 1768C, but if the 12 string comes through, it will get one first.

Y'all folks aren't really helping Handmadeguitars sell his VIP... ;)

But to jump into the fray, I have the VIP in my 07C...
I have pulled it out and dropped it into my 2078T and it worked just fine.
The 'images' are a neat little toy, but it really makes little difference to me.
But some of those image do add a nice touch. Better than just Reverb and Chorus.
I will tell you that when I run the VIP through the 'mic' setting on my Rolands it sounds nice.
Taking that into consideration, the VIP might be a useful tool for running through a straight PA.
Y'know? If you are playing somewhere without a 128 track mixing board and a rack of analog effects.

As to the dummy-plug, at home I have 1/4" plugs lying around even when I ain't plugging-in...
And they give you a Dummy-Plug! Get Over It!

So I dropped my VIP into the 6778LX and took it outside...
This dude carrying a Taylor in a case stops to ask me if I had a "Harmonizer" in my guitar...
(Whatever a Harmonizer is?)
No, I tell him, Virtual Image Processing... and I flipped through the settings and the slider.
He was impressed.

Like I said, I run it through the mic setting on a MicroCube... No added effects.

I've got two guitars that came with the VIP, '07C and 2080. Each has one sticker on the inside of the can and one one the preamp. I can't remember offhand which is which, but one says "SET 0" and the other says "SET 4".

Documentation is sparse at best, so I have no idea if there is any real difference between the digital algorithms or data sets in the two preamps. My ears are too abused to tell the difference between the two, if there is any.

I've dropped the VIP into all the other Ovations in the house and it works. I like it better in some guitars than others, but it does do the live mic thing in all of them. The key seems to be to use 50% or less image added in, and boost the treble eq slider a touch.

Reviving this post due to renewed interest... Anyone know of a VIP for sale??? ... I'm taking out my factory installed New Old stock Fet System and replacing it with the OpPro Studio. Wanting to have the VIP as a drop in alternative for recording.
