Guys, I am new to this board so forgive me if this is not in the right place. I have an Ovation 12 string Custom Legend model 1658. My wife bought this from a family friend for me 20 years ago. Any idea what this might be worth and if this is anything special. I thought about selling it and had it on EBAY for a day and it had a ton of interest which made me think twice about selling. Any help appreciated. Thanks

tonmazz,

First of all, welcome to the Ovation Family. Ya came to the right place.

Second, ya might want to go HERE and check out the 4th question.

Ya could really help us out in evaluating your guitar by posting pics.

CLs are one of the finest that Ovation built. So post some pics and ya'll get a lot of inputs.

Guys, thanks for the warm welcome, it's definately appreciated. From what I can see this is a pretty special guitar. Not in the greatest shape though, still plays like a dream. Here is the link to the ended auction with pics. I wonder if I send to Ovation if it can be fixed up?

Check out the link above, pics are there. I think that would be natural? Not sure.

A 1658-4 to be precise. Very nice.

I was watching that on Ebay.

You should relist with a Reserve you can live with and see what it fetches. My guess is between $450-$650.

Or just tell us what you need for it!
Welcome

Thanks for the welcome and the info.

The funny thing is I hadn't played it in a long time so I was sort of selling it on a whim. I started to put together a short video after I saw all of the interest and realized what a fantastic sounding guitar this was. I pulled it off 5 minutes later! :-) I never realized what a truley nice guitar this is. You see how we take things for granted, had it for 20 years and never appreciated it till now! I am seriously considering sending to Ovation to be made perfect again, any experience with that? Thanks guys.

If you don't mind waiting a while, this would come back to you looking better than ever! But you should be aware that the Ovation factory is SERIOUSLY backlogged with warranty repairs right now, so the wait might be a tough one.

On the other hand, your particular model can be tough to find. If you declare an asking price, someone here might just save you the Ebay fees.

Patch,

Nice try but I am in love with it now. I actually had this at a Music Go Round the other day and in my head would have accepted $75! Luckily the guy couldn't find any info on it and had no basis to make an offer. I am so damn lucky...and stupid. :-)

Thanks for all of the advice on this one. I will be sending it to Ovation to get a full make over, made the call on Friday and shipping it Monday. I can't wait! I'll post some pics when it returns...whenever that may be! :-)

I have several 1658's, as well as a 1659. Started with Ovation with the acoustic version back in 1980.

When I got the 1658-4 in 12/03, the seller had 5 or 6 requests from international buyers in the first 15 minutes - fortunately he was selling CONUS only. Closed the eBay in 17 minutes.

Thanks to UPS, we had to have the top refinished which is not cheap...one of the more expensive charges was the rosette. Not sure what the cracked neck will require but I would recommend a complete refinish of the top.

They can probably check out the electronics, setup, and the bowl for a couple of dollars.

Is it worth it? Yes. I wouldn't sell mine for less than $1,200. This is a great guitar, as well as (IMHO) a collectible. I don't believe you can find a better wood top 12-string. There is a reason that they are not often for sale.

You can do no better than give it to Kim or John back at the factory.

Tony,

Thanks! I am so glad to discover what I really have here. I agree, a total refinish of the top and they were pretty sure they could fix the neck. The good news is that they have all original replacement parts just in case, now I know that would really cost, but at least it's possible if need be. It was actually John that I spoke to so that makes me feel better. Would love to see a pic of yours if you got around to it. My email is tonmazz@comcast.net Thanks

12 strings are an area where I prefer an Adamas over a wood topped Ovation, but having said that, I've got a 1969 GC 12, that is actually the old neck with a new shiny bowl body w/ Adirondack spruce on the top. A really outstanding instrument and sometimes I just play it 'cause it's so cool....

this is a picture BEFORE UPS damaged it...the sellers photos when I bought it...

what is really unigue is that I have one that is in the same color as the Anniversary 6-str...not the natural or dark sunburst, must have been a custom.

Wow Tony that Slothead 12 with the custom features really turned my head. Very nice!

I have a great Elite 12 now that sounds great but it is the all black (what I like to call Stealth) top.
I using this for And You And I from Yes mounted in a Gracie Stand. Sounds fantastic through the board but I wish I had the more traditional look of the natural spruce top. And the Slothead is not something I have taken to before. Nice instrument there, I would buy one of I ever found one myself now.
Thanks for the photo's Hope things are good Tony, good to hear from you.
