There has been a ton of discussion on these guitars. For a quick answer, go to this website http://www.ovationgallery.com/ and search under 6 strings. You'll find a page devoted to the 1537 which will also answer a lot of your questions.

Maybe I'm the only one who's got he nads to say it - The reason so many of us love the sound of this guitar is because it sounds like a freaking Martin. There you go. Dave

My only peeve is that so many people want to paint everything with such a broad brush. That's not such a big deal around here, but on the martin forum you would rather admit to having gay sex with satan than owning an ovation. Dave, I think you just picked a fight with the entire Ovation Fan Club :) The 1537 is an awesome guitar and one of the best sounding wood topped Ovations there is. It's definately in the major leagues. My only complaint is that the freaking thing weighs a TON. I gutted mine by removing the entire electronics, two of the tuners and about half of the braces and the damn thing still feels like a les paul. I may try removing the k-bar next. If anyone ever finds a 1537 in good shape for a good price they should just grab it and ask questions later. Dave

But without the hassle of having to coddle the poor thing to keep from bowing or twisting the precariously set neck. Without having to worry about an impact from a music stand or microphone or for that matter a baby bottle. Exotic Tonewoods and lustrous finishes are cool when they are wrapped around the instrument. Can you strip, restring and adjust action with 1/64th to the 12th fret on a Martin 12 string in 30 minutes? I just did it with the Pacemaker that I got from Nick. Need I mention this instrument has had 1/3 of the top reglued with Gorrila Snot! I was originally drawn to Ovations because they are different and they are practicle. Like me! Well, maybe not so practicle.

Joined: July 2002 Posts: 1900 | I've played O's all my life. Never played many Martins. Have a friend with a custom made D-18. Says it has less overtones for studio work. I played it. No bid deal. Wasn't worth the thousands he payed to have it made. I didn't know an original 1537 was so heavy, but then again that may have alot to do with why it sounds as well as it does. (Oh, also played a 1981 DC-28 cutaway, with the oval sound hole. Sounds dead compared to a deep bowl USA Ovation.)

The 1537 is the closest wood top to an adamas in terms of construction and all that stuff, but at least to my ears they sound no where NEAR similar. Not better or worse, but just so different that you can't really compare them. They belong in two very different camps in my opinion. Both winners. And what's this crap about buying you a beer ???The 1537 is the closest wood top to being an Adamas.

It has it's own voice, that just happens to be one of the best mixtures of wood and fiberglass Ovation ever built. I can't describe it except to say that it has a "quality sound" that compares favorably with high quality wood guitars. But it doesn't sound like them.....
