Ahoy!

Am I a fan just because I registered? I don't
own an Ovation (yet) but I'm poised to change
that... and maybe make my fandom more official.

But first, a couple questions on MM68 Mandolins-

(1) I've read that some are USA built. How does
one tell them apart and is there a tangible
difference?

(2) Does anyone have one for sale?

All MM68 Ovation Mandos are built in USA.
The MCS148 Celebrity Mando is built in Korea.
The MAE148 Applause Mando is built in Korea.

The difference is quality of materials, quality of workmanship, fit and finish, electronics, playability, sound quality and service.

The USA model costs 4-5x as much as the Korean ones. To some people it's worth it, to others it isn't. There's members here that will swear by either extreme. I've owned all three and pretty much you get what you pay for.

That cherry burst mando is sweet lookin. Like the mandocello too, and the Uke.

But the Dingwall bass is pretty eye-popping... bet refretting it will be fun.

Thanks, Dave for the explanation of what is and isn't U.S. built and for your conscientious opinion of quality.

I am interested in the MM68 because my first mando, an inexpensive "water tester" Crafter, was a knock-off of the Ovation. I've purchased two other mandos since then, one worth mentioning: an Ibanez copy of a Gibson 2 pointer. Story goes that they did such a nice copying job that Gibson ordered a cease and desist!

Anyway, the Ibanez sounds good and plays well but just doesn't have the punch and clarity of the Crafter (IMHO) and the Crafter sounds good except that the intonation is woeful up the neck. To paraphrase Dave, I got what I paid for.

I'm thinking I'd really like an MM68, which brings me to Stephen's response: You are more than just a guitar owner! You are a living guitar museum! I concur with Steck's incredulity over the Dingwall- that is an amazing art piece/art tool!

Stephen, I have a sneaking suspicion that all instruments you own are treated with great loving care and are in as good or better condition than when you recieved them. If you are interested in selling the MM68 you have, let me know...

Faznik.....there are collections within the OFC that put mine to shame. I just take a lot of pictures of the same guitar from different angles to give the illusion that I have a lot ;)

Check out Tony Calman, StandingOvation, Miles (Baron Audio, one of our sponsers), BruceDev and a multitide of others for some really eyepopping collections. Miles and StandingO's are so extensive that they are listed with pictures offsite so are not located in the gallery.

All have an excellant design. As you go through the series of Applause, Celbrity, Pinnacle, Ovation USA and Adamas you get higher levels of material and craftsmanship.

Hmmmm, I guess I'm in the company of those who hoard a LOT more guitars than most people I know! That from a guy who has about 30 snowboards- the result of a 7 year stint as a sponsored pro snowboarder many years ago when winning 20 bucks at a contest put you in "Pro" status whether you liked it or not.

Thanks for all the replies!

Now you're just like the rest of us. :D

I'm usually clueless on a lot of the finer points of guitar construction,( heck i just love to play them), but I have learned a lot from the other members of this forum.

I stuck that post in the wrong thread, Stephen saw it and went Huh? about the same time I cut, deleted and put it in the right thread.

(Invoking the Force) You saw nothing! (waves hand)...

Faznick - It's like flavors of Ice Cream - You can survive on just one, but why?
