I am working on an Ovation Preacher as a project guitar. I would like to use an original bridge in it. Body and neck were the only thing still there. Even the frets had been taken off the guitar. Anyone have one they would be willing to part with?

Interesting piece of hardware, but it's not Ovation. It could be Jap, reminds me of something like the Tokai Talbo.

Thanks guys Miles actually had one. Looking forward to installing it on the Preacher. I just purchased some P-90's to put on it as well. And I think I have decided on a custom pickguard, but I'll let you know.

Paul,
I'll do my best. Don't expect to see anything in the too near future. I was planninig on this as a winter project. Although the parts are coming together nicely. I think the biggest obstacle now will be the refret. Since I have never even attempted this it should be quite a challenge.

Something that will make the task a little more difficult is that the frets are proprietary from Ovation. You might call customer service and see if they can sell you some, if they even have any of the old stock.

Miles,
Would that mean that the thickness of the inset is not standard? I know that my friend who sold me the guitar is also doing a second restoration on a Preacher. I'll ask him first if he has any of the Ovation fretwire. It's amazing the stuff this guy has. He just sold about 30 guitars from his private collection and still has over 120. Seems like every time I go to his shop I walk out with something for free. Thanks for the heads up on the frets. :)

I'd be careful if you haven't tried a re-fret before. It's not rocket science but it does require practice, experience and the correct tools. Practice on a junker, check out www.stewmac.com for tools ( fretwire if Ovation don't have what you need.) There's quite a lot of material on the web about re-fretting.

I'm not sure what the actual differences are, I just noticed after I was told that it was special, that Ovation's is shaped like no other. They share a building with a "wire" company, so my guess is that's where it comes from, but that is just a guess.

After the re-fret, there is a whole 'nother artform I've only recently been exposed to in fret "dressing." Now I have certainly heard the term, and done some of it myself, but there are several techniques to insure a smooth edge when finished.

I'll do just about anything to a guitar less finishes and fretwork. I leave that to the professionals.

Actually my buddy is a certified luthier for the past 30 years and does amazing work. I am hoping that he will be guiding me every step of the way. He does fret dressing all the time. Maybe I can even barter with him for the fret work. ;)
