Last spring I purchased a used, mint-condition, late-2008 Adamas 2080 NWT with VIP-5 Preamp. At that time, on the forum I asked about from what microphones these Images were rendered. I got some responses from folks that I felt didn't get to the point of what I was asking about, which was what brands and models of microphones were used in the studio to generate the Images. Being that my guitar was lacking the hangtag that would have stipulated what microphones the Images were rendered from, I recently sent an e-mail to Ovation regarding my question, and here is the response I received:

Adamas 2080 NWT VIP-5 Images:

1) Large diaphragm condensor Neumann U87 Contour cutaway Adamas natural woven "1180" top Teardrop - bass side only 2080

2) Small diaphragm condensor Schoeps CMC64 Contour cutaway Adamas natural woven "1180" top Teardrop - bass side only 2080

3) Large diaphragm condensor Neumann U87 Deep Non-cutaway Adamas natural woven "1180" top Multi Sound Hole, Elite style 1680

4) Dynamic Shure SM57 Deep Non-cutaway Adamas natural woven "1180" top Multi Sound Hole, Elite style 1680

5) Large diaphragm condensor Sound Deluxe E47 Deep Cutaway Uni-directional composite graphite Multi Sound Hole, Elite style - bass side only 1581

I'm thoroughly enjoying my Adamas 2080 NWT and thought I'd share my experience with those who too may be wondering what microphones their guitar's VIP-5 Preamp's Images are rendered from. In other words, contact askus@ovationguitars.com and they'll be very helpful with a quick response!

Say ST, where do you set your blend control? There was a discussion about this a few years ago when the VIP was first released, and it seemed most of us kept the imaging somewhere between 30% to 50%. As I recall, there also seemed to be a preference for one or two specific settings, possibly 4 or 5.

Hi ProfessorBB,

I've found that generally I get the best sound by setting the blend control at 50% (the same with my Martin DCPA1 with F1 Aura). I like Images #1 & #5 the best. I think the best blend depends on the room you're playing in and how loud you have to be. Also, the best Images depend on whether you're flatpicking or fingerpicking. I'm flatpicking 95% of the time and find the two Images mentioned above work best for me.

Great information!

I have four VIP-5 preamps. They are signed with a sticker on the can and on the preamp. I have a "Set 0", "Set 1", "Set 5" and one set without stickers. But I I don't know what guitar they are for, excepted the "Set 5", it's original in my 1680. The "Set 1" I think is out of a 2007C, but mybe I'm wrong.

More likely a 2006C, since the LAVKoa came with set 1.

There is a bit diffence, but not really hearable if you have not the chance to play them all one after the other in the same guitar. And only one is a bit different, it's the one without a label. The others are sounding similar to my ears.

The Excel spreadsheet should have tabs on the bottom that will open other pages within the workbook. If you're having trouble getting it to work, email me the file and I'll get them posted up.

Hi,

is it possible to get the file, too?

My CE-06 and 1680 both have the VIP, but their "papers" aren't a big help. Following tittis informations they should be set 1 and set 5.

Neither the PreAmps nor the cans show any sticker or mark indicating the version of the VIP. - And I must admit that after playing with my iDea, I'm not sure which PreAmp belongs to which guitar. :-(

Any advice?

Many thanks in advance and have a nice weekend,
Juergen
