I've been using Elixir Nanowebs for the last couple of years because I'm cheap and only have to change my strings every 6 months. My guitar at work has 18 month old Elixirs (only the wound ones - the plain strings got rusty) and it still sounds rather punchy. So anyway, I've just acquired a Folklore and by all accounts its a different beast to what I'm used to playing and although I play a lot of finger pickin already, I'm pretty inconsistent with striking the strings. Just want to put it out there to hear what the old style Folklore / Josh White owners use. I've heard that the Blue Steels are good for finger picking but I have no experience with them. Why do I want to know? You guys in the States get your strings a lot cheaper than we do and I want to buy a few sets and put them in the case when my Folklore does its pan-Pacific thing.

Went through a dozen sets of Martin SPs because I got them free, but I gave several sets away. I've also used Martin Clapton's Choice on the Folklore. They sound good and are a dollar cheaper than the SPs here. They all sound good to me. My favorites are free, second favorite is cheap.

They are also less tension so easier fingering and easier on the top. You can hear a recording I made wish you were here M130s on a 1617 played with a pick.

But I use the medium light Spectrums (11's) on my 1614. In my opinion the greatest sound on this guitar. Very clear and balanced, best for pickers with the best playability. Bernie

I really like Elixir Phos Brnz, but they are a compromise. The long life is worth the price increase, but there is some muddying of the tone. They are slippery and feel lower tension. Good for general use or if you want to avoid finger squeeks. Not quite good enough for gigging or recording due to the lack of clarity. Cold Steel sound very good. They seem to be a slightly stiffer string. Sara's preferred string in phos brnz on her 1778T-RF. My favorite so far in 80/20 on the Adamas 2080 due to the guitar's mellowness. Martin SP have a nice sound, bright and happy. They sound the way an acoustic guitar should sound. They have never disappointed on any Ovation in the family. These are my 'gold standard' in comparing any string tone. The only downside is a somewhat shorter lifespan for the tone. Sunbeams are a very nice sounding string but they are lower tension and didn't drive the top as well as other strings. You'll need a truss rod tweak for sure. I still had fret buzz after the tweak. Going up a gauge may be the answer with these strings. Dean Markley seem to be my favorites these days on the wood topped O's. They have a rich complex tone. I've tried several versions of their phos brnz strings and like them all.
