Many of you helped contribute points of view on my custom guitar quest for my summer birthday, and today a placed an order for a Collings dred, jazzed up pretty good. I appreciate your responses! Thank you.

Nice! Did you get the varnish finish?

Congrats on a great choice!

Stonebobbo, I did not get the varnish. I played one with the varnish and it sounded great; however, I played several others without the varnish that also sounded great, so I considered it, but decided not.

Once I decided on the Collings, some of the toughest items to decide upon were:
neck width, varnish or not, adi bracing (the Collings guy on the phone talked me out of this one.)

Stephent28,
Basically it's a D3 with
style 42 top,
style 45 fret inlays,
rose peghead,
Euro spruce top/madagascar back/sides,
1 23/32 nut width.

So, it's sort of a Martin d-42 with cooler woods, a little wider neck width, with a little design on the headstock, made by Collins just for me.

Yes, that wife sure is generous!

Man, that sounds (and will really sound) killer. I'm really curious about Mad Rose - it's supposed to surpass Braz in tap tone resonance, and with a Euro top that will be one fine-sounding instrument.

I thought of putting in a custom order for my Collings, but didn't want to wait that long. Fortunately, I found one to my liking pretty quickly. Congrats, you'll be very pleased.

Beautiful order. Someday, I'm going to have to do the same thing, maybe after Mr. Big takes on the line.

Beal, I was on many forums trying to get as much info and differing opinions as possible.
These boards are a great source of opinion, information, and misinformation! It's interesting trying to sort it all out. I'm happy with my choice and I have no doubt it'll be an awesome guitar.
