Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | In September of 2009, I went to the factory to pick up my rebuilt Book Elite. Now wouldn't you take along your matching mandolin if you had it? And wouldn't you take pictures illustrating you great fortune? And wouldn't you post them online just because...?

| Nice, Have never seen the Mandolin that looks that nice.
I notice with my adamas's and all the ovations I own; I get 99% excellent responses and comments about the sound and the looks of them all. My litle Elite Mandolin is always a surprise to other musicians who do not expect that little thing to sound as loud and as good as it does when played acoustic.

Location: SoCal | Now I'm guessing that the guitar got a whole new body, as it's lighter than the mando and the epi's are not the standard book epi's (but they look great for gay outties).
What's interesting is that you can see 10 years difference in the colors (aging)of the faces..... |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Moody's mostly right. I don't know if the eppis are non-standard, but the original top on the Elite got damaged when it was shipped to me. The shipper was willing to pay for the crack repair at the factory. (Who says Guitar Center is unreasonable.) After a conversation with Kim, I decided to replace the whole top (which means a new bowl of course) and customize it a little with the gloss neck (to match my mando) and the carved ebony bridge (which I think accents that jet black fretboard perfectly). The unintended consequence is that the bridge is no longer pinned in place like the originals and the 87C's which are supposedly identical structurally.
This, and the age difference of over 20 years, are probably the main reasons for the difference in tone between my 87C and my book. For my short-lived thread comparing the two, including pics, follow this link: Twin Sons of Different Eras |

I thought the 87 top construction was the same as the 1547. I asked John B at the factory and he said the 1537/47s were made at the Mooseup(sp) facility, but the construction for the 87 should be the same. IF that IS the case, I could understand a difference in sound, although the age factor may change things a bit. Not trying to put in a plug for my Cedar Elite here, but by comparison, this cedar top has a very deep and loud bass sound also, even with having two eppis. Much deeper than my old deep bowl Custom Legend. Last night I went down "the Wall" and compared low E on all my guitars, and that Cedar Elite sounded very close to my Adamas 1581 "Boom Box". The only other one to come as close was the '07 Collectors. |

Location: SoCal | The Book and the 87C are really great guitars. A more even sound than an A braced Legend (it has more of a distinction between the bass and mids) but a very big sound. I prefer it to the sound of the Adamii.
Patch, it isn't a standard epi for the Book but it easily could have been, it looks that good. The factory did a great job with your Book and even I, a confirmed 87C kinda guy, would be more than happy with just your Book. Like I said, it looks THAT good (gay epis and all)..... |
