I have been down this road more than once (slow learner or just stubborn ?) and unless you are willing to re-do the action on the bridge and nut, and maybe tweak the neck a bit, this idea won't work.

ANY nylon string will vibrate against the frets if the guitar was originally set up for steel strings.

Of course, there are different grades of nylon strings, and the ones called "hard" will be stiffer and not as twangy as regular nylon strings.

You don't. Tuners are wrong for it, as is the nut and action. Thought you knew better than this......

I sometimes put High Octave strings on my guitar to fit into a certain song we're gonna do. It's a temporary thing for a little bit of a gig. Am I to understand that it is impossible to do a similar thing with nylon strings?

Well, I checked D'Addario´s site (www.daddario.com)and found the following tensions for the strings (lbs)

Nylon strings, extra hard tension
E 16.4
B 12.5
G 12.9
D 16.3
A 15.9
E 15.7
Total: 89.7

Phosphor Bronze, extra-light gauge (.010):
E 16.2
B 17.8
G 27.9
D 27.1
A 25.4
E 20.7
Total: 135.1

We are dealing with two thirds of the tension provided by the extra light steel strings. So, it seems that the first problem will be that you need to work the neck accordingly. Another problem will be the nut itself: the treble nylon strings are much wider than the steel ones (usually you will find they are twice the diameter).

Lets say that you work the neck tension and then you file the nut to accomodate the nylon strings. You will find that the guitar top itself will not respond properly, because it was designed to support the high tension associated with steel strings, so it will loose tone and volume.

Is it too difficult to find a nylon string guitar? I would try to borrow one (in fact I have three home, two of them accoustic-electric) before changing the strings of a steel guitar to nylon.

I must have missed this:

What EXACTLY are Silk n' Steel, especially on the top strings? Silk? Nylon? Steel? Don't get it.

Silk and steels have been around as long as I've been playing. I thought they were wound with silk, but it's probably polyester now.

I looked online and it says they're wound with metal? I'd be curious to try a softer string on one of my guitars: will the guages fit on a regular Ovation or Adamas? Or are the strings "fat" like nylons?
