I have noticed the pickup/preamps on my EA Vipers are not nearly as loud or powerful as say the Shadow pickups or the Gibson SST, Takamine pickups, etc...anybody got some insight on my dilema..or is there an adjustment I can make to make 'em hotter? Thanx in advance..Dan

Dan, I compared a couple EA Vipers to the SST and even remembered that the JZ1000 has a Shadow bridge. Made sure they all had new batteries. The output on the SST was hotter then the EA's. There is no adjustment on the EA Vipers that I know of to make them hotter.

Even with OCD, I don't look at it as a dilemma... what problem is it causing that can't be compensated for at the front-end of whatever the guitar is plugged into?

Dan, Unless you are plugging different guitars into the same input how is this a problem? If the guy running the board understands the concept of unity gain (and at the professional level you work at they damn-well should) then any differences in output at the source shouldn't be an issue.

They (Vipers) just seem much softer than other guitars I own..I'm just surprised that the output difference is that significant & all my Vipers are like that..I use a Godin 12 sometimes & when I switch to it..I barely have to turn it up to compare to the Viper almost maxed out...

Couple of suggestions. Soundcheck with the Vipers first with the preamp volume set at a little over 2/3rds. Anything with higher output you just need to turn down, rather than working with the Viper pre maxed. Better still use independant chanels for the Vipers, plug the higher output instruments into another mixer channel. Or buy an MXR Micro-Amp for the Vipers. That will give you as much extra clean gain as you'd ever need.

I change back and forth between guitars on a weekly basis, and noticed this phenomenon some time ago. At that time, all I did differently for the Viper was to flick the input sensiitivity level switch at the back of the monitor amp (AAD Cub) to 0db instead of -10db which is the recommended setting for preamped instruments. However, with an effects board, I just leave it at the lower -10db sensitivity setting for all my instruments and turn up the volume through an expression pedal.
