I just picked up a 30 year anniversary model and I noticed that it is stamped as a 2nd on the back of the headstock. Did Ovation sell any collector models as 2nds? I would have though they would just rework any guitar that didn't live up to their standard. Anyway, it's a pretty nice instrument, Dark Maroon (almost black) solid spruce top, the only fret marking is 30th Anniversary in the 12th fret, pearl on gold tuners, HexFX controls, number 810, with beautiful MOP border on the top & along the neck.
All in all I like it but was surprised to see that it was originally a 2nd.

Ummmm, I've never seen a '2nd' stamped on an 'O'. Maybe I haven't seen enough of 'em... I'm trying though!

Actually stamped "2nd" or "FRG"?

I've seen (and owned) FRG O's. I hear they sometimes stamp perfectly good collector's series that way if they haven't moved for quite awhile, just to get them out the door cheaper & w/o the lifetime warranty.

I've owned a couple with "2" stamped on the back of the headstock. I don't think that's a factory thing, probably some reclaim or salvage outfit similar to MIRC.

I think the whole "FRG" fad started around 2000 or so when the suits woke up and realized they could make more profit selling the seconds themselves and with the added bonus of using it as a defacto inventory control scheme.

Factory Reconditioned Guitar sounds so much better than 'Reject', 'B-Stock', '2nd' or 'USED'...

I've seen lots of older Ovations with a 2 stamped in the back of the headstock.

I have it from a reliable source that the "2" stands for "twice as good as other guitars"

I think that one deserves a "3"

Okay - I understand that some guitars are sold as 2nds. Several of my guitars (past & present) have been 2nds, my question was meant to address the fact that one of the collectable models was marked as a 2nd. That's what I find amazing.

Why? Built by the same people, same skills, same equipment, same inventory control, etc. I think it was the 2007's that they were blowing out as FRG's before labor day of that year.

dont sweat the 2... it means nothing most of the time. My instructor has seconds and tries to muy mostly seconds because they cost less but play exactly the same. It's probably so tiny little flaw that you have to really search for to find.

No sweat... enjoy it!

My second git I purchased in Jan '07, after my hiatus was a cherry Cherry Epi DOT with a Bigsby tremolo from a local pawn shop. It had '2nd' heavily stamped on the back of the headstock. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it other than the stamp.

It was a truly sweet git that I sold in order to aid in my purchase of the '07 Gibby of the Week #3, SG Silverburst!

Don't know how they're doing things now, but back in the day, a AAA was one with cosmetic flaws, and a second was one with either a structural flaw that they couldn't warrantee, or else a cosmetic flaw that looked really really bad.
