Did Ovation sell any collector models as 2nds? I would have though they would just rework any guitar that didn't live up to their standard. Anyway, it's a pretty nice instrument, Dark Maroon (almost black) solid spruce top, the only fret marking is 30th Anniversary in the 12th fret, pearl on gold tuners, HexFX controls, number 810, with beautiful MOP border on the top & along the neck. All in all I like it but was surprised to see that it was originally a 2nd.

I don't think that's a factory thing, probably some reclaim or salvage outfit similar to MIRC. I think the whole "FRG" fad started around 2000 or so when the suits woke up and realized they could make more profit selling the seconds themselves and with the added bonus of using it as a defacto inventory control scheme.

Several of my guitars (past & present) have been 2nds, my question was meant to address the fact that one of the collectable models was marked as a 2nd. That's what I find amazing.

My instructor has seconds and tries to muy mostly seconds because they cost less but play exactly the same. It's probably so tiny little flaw that you have to really search for to find. No sweat... enjoy it!

It had '2nd' heavily stamped on the back of the headstock. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it other than the stamp. It was a truly sweet git that I sold in order to aid in my purchase of the '07 Gibby of the Week #3, SG Silverburst!
