Has anyone out there tried the Audacity Audio Recorder download. Is it pretty good for simple, beginning recording?

I have an old promo Christmas album that has been a tradition for all my girls' lives. I wanted to make CDs for them as a present three years ago.

Of course there was the normal record noise. So I used Audacity to sample the noise twix two songs and 'subtracted' the sample from the whole recording. Wow, what a difference! Worked out great.

So, I'm very satisfied with the freebie...

Yes, it works fine. If you're a professional guitarist making complex multitrack recordings, you might want something else. My playing is comparable to Wayne Kerr's, so Audacity is good enough for me. There are some how-to videos on YouTube- you'll have to sift through them but they can give you a quick start.

I'm a Wayne Kerr wannabee....just can't seem to pull it off. So I guess Audacity is fine for me. Thanks.

I used to use n-Track. After my last computer crashed I just downloaded Audacity and it does everything I need.

Audacity is good, although I preferred Reaper, especially for multi-tracking. I've since gone over to a self-contained unit (Zoom MRS-4) for the recording. I then bring the tracks into either of those apps for mixing. Regardless of what software DAW you use, install the ASIO driver and use that instead of the drivers that came installed with your sound card. The Steinberg Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) protocol has a much lower latency because it bypasses the operating system and accesses the soundcard hardware directly. It's the industry standard for digital audio recording.

You underestimate yourself, db. And G8r's absolutely right - give Reaper a shot.

I like it a lot. All the recordings on my ning page used it. As you can tell, I become more adept with it as time goes on. And in those recordings, there is the impression that there are several people (I hesitate to use the word "musicians") playing, but it's just me and an Adamas 2080 and various accoutrements (e-Bow, fork, Ovation beer glass, my voice, my kids' voices, desk, whistle, a $7 microphone [and it shows!]).

And Audacity. It's good stuff.
