Of course the "No Swimming" flags are up, and of course, idiots are swimming. After the lifeguard went by on his ATV, a couple of teen age girls entered the water with one boogie board. A few minutes later we saw a boogie board pop out of the surf, but no heads. Somebody called 911 and the kid who'd recently passed zipped back in no time, jumped off the ATV and in even less time was in the water with that little red thing they carry. He found the rip and let it carry him out to where we finally could spot two heads in the water. One girl seemed OK but the other was clearly starting to panic. Somehow he got them both to hold on to the red thing and he swam parallel to the beach, then headhed in towing them both. When they got to the beach other lifeguards had arrived on their ATVs, but there was nothing more to be done other than lecture the girls about the flags and it was over. As the young lifeguard returned to his ATV he got round of applause from all of us on the beach. Kid earned his money today. There was some mention of heroes on the 9/11 thread. They're still with us.

While viewing "102 Minutes..." last night, I couldn't help but note the FDNY heading against the fleeing throngs and toward those in need. Many knew what was at stake and you can see it in their eyes; fear with resolve! They're still with us. Bill, yes, the world has heroes performing unselfish acts every minute; so many, if not almost all, go unnoticed and unappreciated. But they're still out there... Those that have paid the ultimate price are the ones that makes the heart ache! Thanx for the reminder... BTW, the film depicts in virtually real time the New York-based events of the September 11 attacks primarily using raw video footage from mostly amateur citizen journalists. (Wikipedia) It is an apolitical film with no non-participant commentaries. (Iffy)
