5.4? In Southern California, we called that a hiccup. I was taking a geology course in college in 1971 when the big San Fernando Valley earthquake let loose. Our class did extensive study of the impact of the quake along the fault line, which ran right through a new track of unoccupied homes. The quake produced a six foot vertical and seven foot horizontal shift at the surface which was easily measured by examining the way the new homes were split in half. Within two months, the destroyed homes were bulldozed and new tri-levels were constructed in their place. Totally amazing.

I thought this was going to be about a new model guitar Ovation had come out with.

They said it could be felt in our area but, at that time of the morning the epicenter could have been under my house and I wouldn't have felt a thing. :D

Prof, those Californians are crazy! Flying in and out of Cali, you can see the major fault lines. There's one at the far east edge of the mountains at the east end of the LA basin, maybe the San Andreas, that is very obvious. There are towns built right on that fault line, and it and runs as far as the eye can see. It goes up north and runs near the shoreline, remaining clearly visible as it goes west of San Jose and the the San Fran area. It disappears west of the Golden Gate bridge under water, reappearing on the other side. It runs between the mainland and Pt. Reyes and then finally looks like it runs offshore.

All along it, especially in the LA and San Fran areas, there are towns and even some dammed up lakes! What kind of lunatic builds a dam on top of a major fault?

You guys are wuz's. I'll take earthquakes any day or snowstorms, hurricanes, tornados, etc. It's all in what you're used to.

Now having said that, there are people out here who build homes in high risk burn/mudslide areas (those areas are usually one and the same) who get burned out or their homes slide down a hill and they go right back. The majority of those people seem to be celebrities with no sense whatsoever.

We had an earthquake here once. I'll take a snowstorm. I don't think they ever had a snowstorm here that killed anybody, except for those Californians that move north and don't know how to drive.

Is it better to buy California property east of the San Andreas fault that will become shore-front or east of the fault that will become island property?

Either way, after the calamity hits the only thing left will be a fleet of roundbacks floating around.

The next Ovation model dedicated to California, the Gondoleer! No sound holes, nust a neck with bowls on either end. Do yourself a favor, get the Baritone!

It woke me up that morning. My desk was shaking, my bed was shaking, and there was audible rattling everywhere. And then the walls started pulsating.

I live in the west Loop in Chicago. Never thought I would experience an earthquake outside of California...
