... at the boat ramp at the end of one of my local streets. Well actually, it was Wednesday...

That's a 28.5" keeper snook caught on a 5'9" Ugly Stik Lite, lil' Penn 4300SS and 8# red PowerPro with a 20# florocarbon leader using a live 4" sardine (locally aka white bait).

What was really a kick was when I released it. The other 'resident ramp rats' couldn't believe I'd commit such a travesty! BTW, if I catch him again, it's grilled snook for supper...

Now if ya think our string topics are 'diverse' here, just get into a rod/reel/tackle setup conversation with the ramp rats!

Someone once asked me, if I had to give up either fishing or guitar playing, which would I choose. I honestly couldn't answer them. One makes me crazy, one keeps me sane. And those are interchangable!

flack,

I saw your post on the the 'e' fish!

Snook is THE desired inshore game fish 'round here due to their strong runs and ability to find anything to break ya off. They also have razor edged gill plates which makes ya hold your breath and pray your leader doesn't get sliced. Plus they're soooo tasty.

What was really exciting 'bout this one was I saw the top water hit. Looked like a washing machine on high speed agitate. It left a hole in the water... !!!

OK, two questions. Why don't I see a picture of this fish, and why on earth would you release it?

The St. Clair Flats area here is known for big muskies.
There is a long, drawn out joke about how a little puppy fell overboard and was taken by a huge muskie. It wouldn't translate well here but the punchline has a charter boat captain pretending to care but really trying to find out "... what color was the dog?"

Don't know what happened to the pic. Let's try this...

As to why I released it, I already had fish in the freezer. Plus I knew I'd get a 'reaction' from the 'rats'... ;)

Geeez, now the first pic is back...

I've had a lot of hobbies over the years, golf, bicycling, shooting, reading, guitar playing, to name a few - but I could never get into fishing. Probably because I never knew until I saw Jimmy Whats-His-Name on TV and read Hiaasen's "Double Whammy" that: YOU DON"T HAVE TO KEEP THE FISH! I didn't know that. I didn't want them, so I never tried to catch them.

I do live across the street from the ocean . . . maybe I'll get a Ronco Pocket Fisherman and see how it all works out.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.... Snook season... Best whitefish there is.

when we first moved down here in 85 I could call home and ask the wife how many she wanted and could catch my limit at the old Barber Drawbridge in Vero... in about 2 hours....

fast forward to today, you can be out all night long and not even get one... but sometimes you're lucky. can catch all the sailcat and sheepshead you want though... but seems like the Snook have been fished way down in numbers...

nice catch Johnny!

Johnny, from that pic looks to me like you're trying to stretch it to make the minimum length. :D

2ifbyC . . . what Losov said. Thanks for the translation.

My fishing experience is pretty limited. But I've heard some tales. Including one about the big one that got chomped by a shark before getting in the boat, and the remaining half was under the limit. Did it count? Did it not count? The Fish and Game guy's decision: "Let's just pretend I never saw it."

Well, first, it's not totally off-topic if you make your leaders from discarded guitar strings… ;)

There are so many great comments on this thread, I'll use shorthand;

- I love to fish - Nice catch, Iffy
- I love to eat fish - never tried snook until about a month ago, it really is fantastic.
- I'll fish for anything, anytime, point me to the water.
- THE fish everyone seeks here in Texas are Red Drum (aka "Redfish" or "Reds.") I believe they range all along the Gulf Coast and south Atlantic? Actually, I think I have heard that Amelia Island is supposed to be a good place to fish for Reds?
- Oddball - "I thought these posts were supposed to be in English?" - funny line!, I bet some people would react to the ON topic threads the same way; "I have a 73 1117 1-11/16" nut, AAA spruce, with EXPs, etc, etc…" ;)
- Slipkid - The Muskie/dog joke - once when we were fishing for Muskie and Northerns in the U.P., my buddy caught a huge Northern during a slow fishing week. He made the mistake of admitting that he had used any ugly pink spoon (don't remember what kind) and within an hour, you could not find a pink lure in stock at any bait-shop or store nearby ;) Fisherman will try anything…
- LOSOV - "Double Whammy" by Carl Hiason is hilarious, a must-read for anyone who likes to fish, and pretty funny even if you don't…

Back when I was growing up here, snook were also called 'soapfish' due to their off taste. Around here back then, fish were just scaled and cooked.

The skin produces that 'soapy' flavor. Once folk started to fillet 'em, the snook became very popular table fare. That's about the time the Fish & Game gave them gamefish status and started setting catch/size limits.

It's said that every hour fishing adds an hour to your life. Now if I could just quit smoking...
