At my lesson last night, we were jamming in E major, doing some blues licks. It was probably the coolest lesson I've had in a long time!
The thing about this is that I am finding out that I actually like blues music. I wasn't exposed to blues music as a child, and didn't listen to it only until the past few months. I have found out that I like John Hammond Jr., Josh White and Elmore James.
Who knows, maybe some of my tone will include the blues!

Location: Cicero, NY | The blues grow on you. Listen to some Keb' Mo. A young guy who's a (Grammy winning) throw back to the classic blues players. Great stuff. Oh and Susan Tedeschi is really great too. |

And I just discovered Susan Tedeschi last night while watching YouTube!

I didn't know anything about Eric Johnson before I posted this quote. It would appear that he is into gear, but telling people that tone isn't in the gear, it is in your hands. Am I missing something here?

So within the sound of the equipment you're playing you always will sound like you.

Michelle, you will learn that Beal and Temp have a great deal of knowledge, but they are sometimes a bit terse. When prompted, however, Temp can expound with so much detail that I get a headache. |

You're not missing anything. I actually heard Les Paul say "I can pick up any guitar and within two seconds, I'll sound like Les Paul."
The only thing is, I ain't Les Paul. Heck, with the way I've been playing lately even Keith Partridge sounds better than me! :eek: :D

Perfect example: Matt Smith's Saturday Show at Amelia2. He did the entire gig with borrowed gear, even down to the pedals and DI boxes. Sounded killer, exactly like Matt Smith. He may have been more comfortable with his own instruments and FX stuff, but from the performance noone except himself would have known that. |

Alot of the old blues players could get all kinds of tones out of their guitars and amps that players nowdays can't do with a half dozen pedals.
But then they didn't have the choices then, if they wanted to sound different they had to work at it with what they had. I was going to cross post something for support from another board but couldn't find it soon enough.
Same goes for acoustic you can go soft & subtle to loud & twangy.
Annie if your starting to appreciate blues music I'd suggest renting "Cadillac Records" although not factual to a "T" histoically it is the story of the "blues" Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin Wolf, Etta James.
And if you get a chance, Eric Clapton's 2006 Japan tour with Derek Trucks, side 2. "You've got a Good Friend" my favorite acoustic solo blues tune.
