1994 or 2007 - looking at buying one of these 2 guitars. Have not played either one. Have a 1617 for 31 years - will I like either of these?

I have never played a 1994, but the 2007 is Really nice.

I don't know how much you are paying for your 2007, but here is one for $750 or so...
(don't know about the seller, you might wanna contact him/her)

How would you compare this to a 1617 or the GC you had listed?

I had a nice Beater 1617... it's gone to a better place (I hope).
My 07C came with extra-light strings on it (haven't changed em yet) and it still sounds really nice and full. Even with these strings on it, it will pump-out the volume.
One day I will change them to EJ16 Lights or Custom Light EJ26.
In the meantime, it is a nice guitar.
Also the VIP preamp is interesting...
I don't like the tuner, but it is okay.
The imaging technology is cool to run through my AC/DC PA.
Alot of folks here say that they like the OP-Studio better.
But that is "opinion"... It is useful preamp.

Plus it is Purdy!
Oh... There were only 558 07C's made.
There were 1763 1994 Collector' made.

Not that it should matter... I just wanted to share that! :D

Haven't tried the 94 but the 07 will blow it away, it's that good :)

I got two books from the library. I only read one but I like it better than the other.

There you go!

Perhaps the other one had nicer pictures in it. ;)

All I said was...
I have never played a 1994, but the 2007 is Really nice.
I didn't imply that it was "better" than the '94...
Although you think that they would do better with 13 more years experience, ay?

Hey nothing wrong with being passionate about what you like. I've never owned an 07 or a 94, much less compared them side by side.

One thing about Ovations is that they all fall within a pretty narrow bandwidth. We talk about them like this one is a 10 and that one is a 2. But truth is in my opinion they aren't all that different. Which is a very good or a very bad thing. If you like the ovation sound you're going to like almost every ovation. And proof of that is how many of us have bounced around among dozens and dozens of Ovations because they all fall in our "zone". Problem is that if you don't particularly care for the Ovation sound you're sorta stuck because they all sound similar within a pretty narrow range. I would bet if I played an 07 and a 94 that I would have some preference of one over the other, but in the grand scheme of things I bet they ain't all that different in terms of sound. Wether you like the older electronics, k-boom neck and non-contour bowl of the 94 is just personal preference.

Toby's right in that the same basic tone is there regardless.

But the '94 C is a mid depth bowl, while the 07 C is a deep contour bowl. The 94 will have slightly less volume and a more precussive sound. The 07 will have a bigger more airy sound.

Problem is, you gotta play them to really understand.

1617, your 30 year old Legend --- does it have a K-bar neck and A bracing? If so, it will sound more like the 07.....

Definitely not A. Looks and feels like VT8. I have played several instruments from this era both A and VT8 and have found the VT to be a little more open and balance. The A to me sounds a little "thuddy" and constricted. But maybe its just these specimens. I agree with the "One thing about Ovations is that they all fall within a pretty narrow bandwidth." and I like it. Recently sold my Taylor K22 all Koa that was an exceptional looker, sounder and player but there was just something missing. The experience of playing made me appreciate the Ovation more and improved my ear and technique. I fingerpick with fingernails and find a softer touch now is more expressive.
