Location: Warren,Pa. | I looked on ebay at ukes for the first time last night. I'm in love with 12 string guitars; would that mean I'd like an 8 string uke? Is a 6 string uke strung and played like a guitar? |

No, a 6 string uke is not played like a guitar.
All ukuleles are strung in 4 courses, meaning you play and finger "4 notes" at a time.
On a 4 string uke all four courses are single strings, so the courses are G-C-E-A
On a 6 string uke the 1st and 3rd courses are doubled, so the courses are Gg-C-EE-A. Note that the "G's" are octaved.
On a 8 string uke all four courses are doubled, so the courses are Gg-CC-EE-AA. A slight variation is to also octave the C's, which would be Gg-Cc-EE-AA.
Bottom line, there's only 4 notes any way you slice it.

Location: GA USA | Bauer, note that a Concert sized uke is slightly larger, and easier for guitarists to get used to than a Soprano.
Dave's PDF is a good resource. I included it on the Capn's Trinket for member 7000, along with a bunch of uke tabs. Dave sold a BUNCH of Concert ukes to OFC members a few years ago very reasonably. Maybe one of them who hasn't touched theirs would wanna sell it...

Location: Phoenix AZ | Attending an OFC event is a great experience. But let's be honest, it does not come with out consequences.
First of all it's not cheap. Last weeks Amelia gig probably cost me north of 1500. Well worth it, but money is money. And time away from work, time away from family. For guys who travel 50% of the time for their work anyway, flying away someplace for guy fun isn't always easy to sell to the home team.
Now, that being said. I would HIGHLY encourage anyone if AT ALL possible to attend some kind of OFC event. Or host your own! You can not appreciate what goes on, nor can it really be described, unless you have experienced it first hand. Friendships that initiated via forum, get cemented in person. And 7 years in I can honestly say I have OFC contacts in every possible corner of the country, and world, that I could show up and ring their doorbell at any time.

We have any members in Vienna? I'll be there April 5 and 6. Then Zell am See and back up to Stuttgart to get a Porsche fix.
Stephen, I've been around. I've dropped in at Dave, Tony and gh1's house, been to a couple NW Gatherings, had 4 or 5 OFCers visit here and probably met 20 or so at the gatherings. I plan to meet you at the Professor's in July. |

Location: Yorkshire, England | You won't get an 8 string Uke, if you do it'll most likley be a mandolin and tuned as such. The Uke is primarily designed as an accompanyment/chordal instrument rather than for picking melodies out on. But there again rules are made to be broken and anything is possible, listen to the Ukelele Orhestra of Great Britain if you get the chance. |
