My three year old niece and my five year old nephew!

My niece and nephew had wandered into my bedroom, where I keep my guitar. Ny niece started asking questions about it, and I ended up playing the first few chords to "Looking for Space" by John Denver.

Their eyes got wide and they had huge smiles on their faces! It was only a few seconds after playing that they wanted to touch the guitar. While holding it, I let them touch the strings.

My nephew asked questions like, "how does it make that sound?" and "what does that thing do?". He was asking about my capo. My niece wanted to know what I did with the little "stone", which was my tortoise shell looking pick.

I gave my nephew my guitar. It is so big that he ended up laying it flat and picking it. Who knows, maybe we'll have the next Jeff Healy in our family.

Anyway, I asked him what he was playing and he said "oh, just something I heard on the radio." Then he went to play his "something from the radio" for his Grandma.

I asked them if they wanted a guitar for their birthdays, and naturally they said yes. I'm thinking about a little pink toy guitar for my niece (she loves pink) and a little sunburst guitar for my nephew.

I've got a nephew that also is interested. His mom bought him a toy guitar for Christmas, but my brother and I are discussing moving up to one of the 1/2 or 3/4 size Applause guitars soon. There are also some decent electric guitars for kids.

Indiana guitars make a half size guitar in pink that is very playable and actually sounds very good. It is called the "Filly". The "Colt" is a natural finish in the same size. If you can find an Indiana or Morgan Monroe dealer near you, ask them to order one for you. They sell for under $60 and they really are great little guitars. I have even sold a few to adults as travel guitars.

Wait until they start asking for Puff the Magic Dragon. That was the standard request for both my daughters and all their friends, who invariably wanted a couple of encores.

Other than the fact that I must have played that song 47 million times over the last 16 years, the interaction of family, kids and guitars has been priceless. Glad you are started down that rewarding road.

Thank you, John!

Whether it was playing hide and seek, going through a closet and pulling out a doll that my grandmother made for me or the kids playing on the organ and my guitar, it was a special day all around.

Can't tell you how many times I played "The Bear Went Over The Mountain" to my daughter when she was little. She used to BEG for it. Funny...it seems to have the opposite effect now that she's 15.

Can't wait to pull that one outta the bag come Wedding Day though (and only the Good Lord above can stop THAT from happening!).

Michelle,

There is absolutely nothing like hooking the 'babies' onto/into music.

I have one G-baby that is approaching four and he can ID guitars, violins, flutes, saxes, trombone, etc. just by listening to the music. He wears out the bongos I have for all the G-babies. Totally amazing...

Music is such a wonderful gift. Your 'unwrapping' is just the beginning... ENJOY!

Mike,

That's TJ's ol' '97C (whoa, that's apostrophe rich). It's not leaving the 'stable'!

One of dem G-babies will have that '97C with along the cherished history. Thanx TJ!

BTW, Mason, the 'green hat', is playing a toy drum with a plastic salad fork & spoon. He's the one that will be what I had hoped I could be as a musician.

Life is great... just too short at my age... ;)

Cover of the Rolling Stone is a great song. And if I am not mistaken, I may have played it once or twice when I was not stoned. :p

When my wife was pregnant for my first two children, I used to play James Taylor's Sweet Baby James to them in-utero. After they were born, I could always stop their crying by holding them against my shoulder and walking slowly around the room and singing Sweet Baby James softly to them. I never finished that song when they were still cyring. Man, what a great memory.
